College Press Publishing A History of the Church: From Pentecost to Present

This history book is designed as a textook for a one-semester survey of church history. Subject areas include the Apostolic church, monasticism, the rise of Islam, the medieval, papacy, conciliarism, the Renaissance, Prostestant revolt, rationalism, the Eastern church, missionary expansion, and the age of ecumenicity. Questions and projects at the end of each chapter are expecially designed for deeper study. Formal students will have the material supplemented by lectures and otehr assignements. Church study groups may want tot use the text as the basis for an examination of the history of the church. The questions and projects at the end of the chapters are especially designed to stimulate their thinking about the past developments. Still other individuals may simply want to read the work as an introduction to the topic. History consists of the events of the past and an interpretation of those events. All too often the facts of the past are meaningless without an adequate interpretation which demonstrates their significance.

The author is honest to state that every text has a bias. He then states his bias. The historical account given by Mr. North is factual, honest and easy to read. He does not favor one group over another but gives facts that allows the reader to reach his/her own conclusions. Study questions at the end of each chapter generate discussion and help the reader to think through historical situations. Expanded biography at the end of each chapter directs students to further sources. A very good text for a Bible study, Sunday School class, or university general history class.
As a PH.D. candidate in Church History with little Church History background, this text has given me an excellent overview of Church History to prepare me for future classes.
