B&H Books Judges & Ruth: New American Commentary [NAC]

The New American commentary is for those who have been seeking a commentary that honors the Scriptures, represents the finest in contempory evangelical scholarship, and lends itself to the practical work of preaching and teaching. This series serves as a minister's friend and a student's guide. The New American Commentary assumes the inerrancy of Scripture, focuses on the intrinsic theological and exegetical concerns of each biblical book, and engages the range of issues raised in contemporary biblical scholarship. Drawing on the skills and insights of over forty scholars and encompassing forty volumes, the NAC brings together scholarship and piety to produce a tool that enhances and supports the life of the church. Daniel Block is professor of Old Testament Interpretation and Associate Dean at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky.

This commentary provides an excellent exposition on the Book of Ruth. It is certainly one of the better commentaries on this book. However, Block's comments on Judges exceed anything else I have seen on this book. It is written from an Evangelical perspective, though traditional conclusions are not always maintained. Block is sympathetic to the historical accuracy of the narrative. But he also appreciates the fact that Judges is a literary work. And while not ignoring redactive concerns, he chooses to focus on the cannonical form of the book as we have it. This commentary covers virtually everything a pastor, teacher, or professor could need. The section on Ruth is very good, but the section on Judges is even better.

Perhaps to become the standard evangelical commentary on Judges at the scholarly and pastoral level, Block's treatment of key issues historically, grammatically, and theologically make this a must for every pastor and student.

A good and very thorough treatise on Judges. Treats the book in depth, including word studies. Deals with the book from a less common perspective--God's grace. A DEFINITE RECOMMEND!
