Commentaries provide a wealth of information to a student of the Bible. We can turn to them when we encounter a passage in Scripture that gives us pause. We can also use them to understand a particular point of view. Both of those can be found in John Calvin’s 22 volume commentary set.
John Calvin was one of the great reformers of the church. He devoted himself to preaching and teaching God’s Word. Throughout his life he wrote about the doctrines we find in Scripture. His Institutes of Christian Religion is a classic and his commentaries are excellent as well.
He is most known for his teaching on the doctrines of grace, or better known as Calvinism. In this commentary set you will find those doctrines expounded throughout. This shouldn’t be a hindrance to anyone who objects to that teaching because there is so much more in this commentary set than those doctrines. Also, this will give you a better understanding of those doctrines which is a good thing.
As I prepare to teach Sunday School or preach a sermon I turn to Calvin as much as anyone else. His commentaries are an invaluable tool in my Bible study and will be in yours. Your faith will grow as you sit under Calvin’s teaching.
The only books of the Bible Calvin didn't write a commentary on are 2 and 3 John and Revelation.
As an added bonus, you will receive a copy of his Institutes when you order through Christianbook. Don’t pass up this commentary set.

As a member of the church of Christ (re: New Testament) I am not a 'calvinist', but am interested in commentaries in general. Awhile ago, a preacher told me that Calvin's commentaries are actually pretty interesting, and just the other day another one told me that he doubted that Calvin himself would approve of the TULIP thing. Now as I am using this commentary, I am finding things to suggest he may have a point. For example, he says a few things about predestination in his comments on Ephesians chapter one that support that notion.
The set is well bound, and set in a very readable type, comfortable even for an old man like myself. At this great price especially, I highly recommend it.
The 'Institutes' book that came with it is also quite interesting. He makes probably the best case that can be made for what is called 'Infant Baptism', but it just doesn't hold water. This guy had a lot of free time on his hands. And also an opinion of himself that was a bit higher than it should be, otherwise he is an interesting read.

This is truly a great set by one of the greatest minds in Christendom.
I have newer commentaries, but I all ways find myself going back to this set. It is a good balance of application and exegesis.
For this price you can not go wrong. It does not matter if you hold to all the points that Calvin teaches, you will find yourself being blessed by a man whose heart is running after God.
Be Encouraged:-)

An excellent glimpse of the thinking of one of the early reformation movement's main voices. John Calvin's interpretations provide a thorough treatment of the word through the eyes of a person of his time. Sometimes unforgiving of the established religious groups of his time, he nevertheless provides an honest, though maybe a bit self assured view of the scripture. Overall an interesting peak into the thinking of the early reformation movement.

This set of commentaries is remarkable for the money. The quality of the books themselves is definitely good. The "Institutes of the Christian Religion" and is a BIG hardback book (EXCELLENT QUALITY), over a 1,000 pages & retails for $24.95. BTW I agree with Dr. D.A. Carson that Calvin's commentaries are excellent, but you should always cross check with modern commentaries since modern commentaries have a much larger resource pool to draw from (additional manuscripts and other writings from the patristic era discovered by archaeology, etc...). Calvin's resources were very few (much like Sir Isaac Newton) yet his exegetical skills were razor sharp; hence, producing this consistently solid series of commentaries - BUY IT!

Even though I find much of John Calvin's theology to be rationalistic and glory-driven, nevertheless, this 22 volume set of his commentaries is an amazing and worthwhile deal. Calvin the most influential theologian of the reformation period (even more so than Luther--whose theological tradition I follow). Too many have dismissed Calvin out of ignorance, having never read him. It is time that we start to read Calvin again, and assess exactly what he got right and what he got wrong.
A familiarity with Calvin's works opens up dialogue between Protestant church bodies, and causes us look to our common object of faith: Jesus Christ. The Christology of Calvin--which I find to be in error on a number of accounts--is well presented in these commentaries. Moreover, the free inclusion of Calvin's Institutes leaves you wondering if such a deal is too good to be true.
In terms of value, it is an excellent buy. In terms of theology, it is a good way to familiarize yourself, whether or not you agree entirely, with one of the greatest theologians of history.

John Calvin's commentaries arrived at my home within a few days after ordering wonderfully packaged. I enjoy the commentaries immensely and the additional copy of Calvin's Institutes. The series has been a great addition to my personal and ministerial life, and I would highly recommend Calvin's commentaries to everyone--whether they're a Calvinist, Arminian, or what-have-you. These are great, thorough commentaries that deal with the original languages as well as having practical application for the Christian. They're also a great asset for personal bible study or private devotions.

I have purchased a great many things from Christianbook.com over the years, but this by far has been one of the greatest investments I've ever made. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading Calvin's thoughts, and have found his commentaries and "The Institutes..." to be a well-spring of knowledge and insight from God.
