Thomas Nelson Church History in Plain Language, Third Edition

This updated edition of Bruce Shelley's classic text Church History in Plain Language includes new developments within the church and its 20th Century missionary programs, discusses the impact of emerging technologies on the gospel, and explores the explosive growth of Christianity in the third world. But it also covers everything that came before--from Jesus to the martyrs, the martyrs to Augustine, and on down to the Reformation and, of course, the present day.

Incredibly reader-friendly, Shelley's book edifies, teaches and provides a clear window into the eventful history of the Christian church.

A good introductory text for Church History. One glaring omission is Zwingli.

I am thoroughly enjoying this book. It is well written- as if a conversational lecture from a very knowledgeable source. There is a lot of material covered, though, so know that this isn't a "weekend book."

I found this to be a very well-written book, although it took me longer than expected to finish; it seems to be wriitten more in the style of a textbook than I expected. I would recommend having a good collegiate dictionary on hand. It is a useful addition to my reference library.

The product met my expectations. Very thorough. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to understand the history of the church starting with 6 BC and into the present. It is long - 500 pages - but it is divided into chapters for the different ages, like the middle ages, the age of the Christian Roman Empire, etc. There is also history of the Muslim faith. I am still reading it but can hardly put it down because I find it so interesting.

Shelley takes on the unenviable task of summarizing primarily western Church history into an easily swallowed dose. He pretty much succeeds, but the nature of the task requires summaries and broad strokes that sometimes seem prone to inaccurate interpretations. On the one hand, it is a manageable read and not a bad introduction for someone not used to reading history. On the other hand, it does not go into enough detail or specific source citations to make a good reference.

I purchased this book for a class. However, the information is extremely in formative and easy reading. This is the first time I have taken a class and honestly look forward to the readings. I would highly recommend this book for personal knowledge as well as required reading.

I read this book as a textbook to a class and found it to be both enjoyable and informative. Although other multivolume sets do a bit better job at digging deeper into the various aspects of church history, it would be difficult to find a single volume that does a better job than this. Shelley has a way of making the history fit together in a way that other authors simply cannot do. My only criticism of the book was that the latest additions to this work seem to be tacked on at the end and they seem to lack the polish that the other chapters had. It is a great book and I have recommended it to others who want a single volume work that is enjoyable to read yet informative.

Great Book! We use it for entering students at Charnock Institute of the Bible to prepare them for more advanced readings. You will love the way the information is presented. A good primer.

I used this book for my church history class and found it to be interesting for the general reader and the Bible student. Every believer should know something about our history and this book would be an excellent read for anyone who wants to learn the events that helped make the church what is today. \\\
