Baker Hurt: Inside the World of Today's Teenagers

Contemporary adolescents seem confident, well-adjusted, and happy. But beneath the surface, they're often lonely, insecure, and empty. What's going on? Claiming that adults have "abandoned" teens just when they most need support, Clark's ethnographic study examines today's changing youth culture from the inside out and suggests five strategies to "turn the tide of systemic abandonment." 236 pages, softcover from Baker.

A must have for any youth worker. If you're dealing with today's youth, DO NOT kid yourself into thinking that you won't come across issues you've never even dreamed were possible. It's not a heavy read, but your heart may be heavy after realizing just what today's teens are going through and covering up.Again, a must have..

Chap Clark hits right at the heart of the crisis facing todays teenagers. Be warned, even with his 'five strategies to "turn the tide of systemic abandonment."' this book presents far more questions than answers. I found the sheer weight of the problem overwhelming to read about at times. But if we are to begin to make an impact we need books like this which lay out the magnitude of the problem so that we can come together in our attempts to make a difference. A must read for ANYONE working with teenagers.

This book was recommended to me by my youth pastor, and as a senior pastor I'm glad I've read it. If you thought you understood youth and their lifestyles, then think again. Chap Clark reveals that the youth of today are greatly different than the youth of twenty or even ten years ago. Combining hard sociological data with a Christian compassion for young people, the author enlightens anyone who comes into contact with teenagers. I strongly recommend this book to any parent, pastor, church leader, or other adult who is working with teens. We can't truly minister to younger generations until we've taken the time and effort to understand their unique needs and wants. Clark does an excellent job here of summarizing them both.

This is a VERY eye-opening book. The second you think "I've heard/seen it all" the pages of this book saturates your pride with humility. If you think you know the world of teenagers... read this and realize, possibly for the first time, that you probably never truly will. The hope comes in the fact that God does.As a youth pastor, this gave me a refreshing personal agenda to lock arms with God and stand alongside the lives of high school students of our community and allow my life to be intermingled with theirs. A life shared is one changed. This book changed mine. Definitely recommended for youth pastors and parents. But also for ANYONE working with teenagers.
