Bought this to read on the 11 hour bus ride home after a ninety day rehab. Read practically the entire thing on the journey. It was an exciting, amazingly informative and detailed overview of the status of Septuagint research from it`s origins to the latest editions of the text and the newest English translation. Introduces this specialized field of study to the educated layman in a non-pedantic way that made me want to learn more; much more. I`d rate this as semi-technical, but don`t let that intimidate you if you haven`t gone to seminary. It`s far from dry, stale, tasteless and hard.
Jobes and Silva have produced a first rated introduction to the Septuagint thus making a complex subject understandable. The newcomer as well as the learned scholar can benefit from this introduction. The book is well organised into chapters beginning with the history of the Septuagint right up to the modern day study on the subject. Each chapter closes with a section giving information for further study. It is set to become a standard introduction to the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible. I recommend this volume to students and pastors alike.

Review 3 for Invitation to the Septuagint

This book is one of the finest contributions to the study of the Septuagint that I have read. Most every aspect is touched upon and enough valuable information is provided the reader that they may stop, having been thoroughly educated, or proceed on with further studies. This is the best one volume work available on the subject. It is informative and truly enjoyable to read.
