Baker Academic The Apostolic Fathers: Greek Texts and English Translations, 3rd edition

Following the recent publication of his thoroughly revised translations in The Apostolic Fathers in English, 3rd ed., Michael Holmes, a leading expert on these texts, offers a thoroughly revised and redesigned bilingual edition, featuring Greek (or Latin) and English on facing pages. Introductions and bibliographies are generous and up to date. In the textual apparatus, existing notes have been revised and expanded, and well over two hundred new notes have been added. This handsome and handy one-volume, thin-paper edition, with a ribbon marker and reader-friendly page layout is a great addition to your library.

Michael W. Holmes (Ph.D., Princeton Theological Seminary) is professor of biblical studies and early Christianity at Bethel University. A leading scholar of the Apostolic Fathers, he is writing a major critical commentary on Polycarp's Letter to the Philippians and The Martyrdom of Polycarp, and (with David de Silva) a substantial introduction to the Apostolic Fathers (forthcoming from Baker Academic).

As a long time student of the Greek NT, I find this work to be both stimulating and comforting. For years, I have considered the probable course of events that led the primitive church to take on the form of the post-apostolic church. More than any other volume, this book takes me to the time and events that caused those changes to occur. In order to understand the nature and form(s) of the church today, you must transport yourself back to time of the apostolic fathers. For me, this collection is the appropriate vehicle. It is a gift to the saints.

Michael Holmes has done a great job providing text, critical apparatus and translation of the Apostolic Fathers (70-150AD). I found this work accessible, scholarly and an invaluable aid for contextual appreciations of early Christianity and NT texts. Well worth the relatively small amount I paid for it from Christianbook.com! Phillip Lisle, PhD student, BA(Hons, History), BTheol (Biblical Studies)
