Focus Publishing Incorporated Concord Cunningham: The Scripture Sleuth #1

It has been said that one can find the answers to all of life's mysteries in the Bible. The Word of God is sufficient to meet all our needs. Finding the answers requires at least a basic knowledge of the Bible. The concordance is a topical index of key words that lead a scholar to appropriate Bible verses. It is a valuable tool to finding the answers in the Word of God. Concord Cunningham is a boy who has discovered the value of a concordance and uses it to solve mysteries in his community. His success brings him acclaim, and a reputation as " Scripture Sleuth". Readers will be challenged to solve the mysteries without the advantage of a concordance, but Concord Cunningham will reveal the source of the answer in Scripture. This is the first of a series. Matthew Halverson is eager for young readers to discover how to find God's answers to life's questions in the Bible.

All "Sleuth" NO "Scripture"

I was very excited to see a book that would be using "Scripture" as its main basis...I loved the cover where the main character is magnifying "Thy word have I hid in my heart" verse. I was VERY disappointed to find that the book has VERY little to do with living for the Lord, or using Scripture to help you LIVE life.
I, unlike the other parents in these reviews, used this book as a "read aloud", so I read the WHOLE book WITH my 9 year old daughter. Basically, Concord is usually involved in some lie, theft, or mean-spirited prank that he "calls them out on" by using some random scripture which helps him figure out WHAT happened in the heinous act.
Here's an example: One story Concord's brother is playing cards with a friend who claims he's "psychic", but he's actually CHEATING. So, since the boy is cheating by looking into his cup of water to see his card, Concord looks up "water" and arrives at Proverbs 27:19 "As in water face reflects face, ..." Then Concord can "bust" him. SO many things wrong with this scenario. First of all, should we be joking about someone using psychic abilities? Should we bust someone who is in sin? No...we should lovingly go to them and bring their sin to their attention, so they can repent. There's no repentance, nor use of Scripture to restore this person lovingly, who is in sin.
Every other scenario is exactly the same. Some people seek out Concord, not because he loves the Lord, but because he can "solve crimes". I really don't see how the Bible is necessary in this book at all. Okay, it's not.
What's happening here is the Bible is taken out of context (or basically in NO context at all), and used as ANY other book could be used (I'd say a book of poetry might be sufficient). 2 Tim 3:16-17 says, 16 "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." This book shows how NOT to use Scripture...for personal gain, for calling people out, for busting them, for being hailed as a hero, etc.
The only good thing was that I was able to show my daughter that just because something CLAIMS it's of the Lord, doesn't mean it is. I'd rather have my children read a secular book, instead of a book which uses the Bible in a completely useless and non-life changing way.

I got this book for my 7 1/2 year old son and he loves it!! They are like Encyclopedia Brown but Biblically based. My son loves looking up the scripture at the end to get the clues and it is helping him to get familiar with how to find scripture addresses. It is possible for him to read the book himself (maybe more of a 3rd grade level) but he enjoys being read to and it's fun to do it together.

My 10 yr. old son received 2 of these books for Christmas and absolutely loves them! He and his 14 yr. old brother actually let me read several of the chapters to them so they could work together to figure out the clues. I hope Mat Halverson considers writing more books like this -what a great way to get kids into their Bibles! Bravo!

I purchased this book for my 9 year old son and he enjoyed the book a whole lot! He loves mystery-type books and being that we are responsible for what he is exposed to, the description of this series seemed perfect...and it was!!! I will definitely be purchasing the other 3 books in the series. He was so intrigued with how Bible verses were used to give clues toward solving the mysteries. An excellent concept. I wish there were more of this series.

I had the first book since Mat first published it, and finally read it last year. It was awesome! My first thought upon finishing was, "Who can I buy this for?" My daughter will get the set for her birthday, as well as all of her friends from church. This is really well done, fun and inspirational too!

Thank you Mat! These books are wonderful. I purchased them through another site and could not be happier! My son is eleven and I have to stop him every night after one story or they would be gone by now. These stories give us the opportunity to share the Bible and find verses that we knew were there but never really connected with. Again, thank you and keep up the good work!

I just purchased this book from the author for our church library. What a wonderful book - every child should have one! My 12 year old daughter loved it and it was wonderful to see her looking up scripture in the bible. BTW there is a second book out called Concord Returns - I'm writing my check now!!!

Like the other reviewer, I came to this site looking for another book in this terrific series! My son, 11 years old, loved this book. He was anxious to tell me about the stories and the solutions from Scripture. We look forward to the next one.

My 9 year old daughter loves figuring out riddles and mysteries. She devoured this book then gave it to a male friend who also loved it. It's one of those great books that teach and reach.I came to this site to find another in the series but, no luck.Hope there is another out there somewhere.
