Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. Our Father Abraham: Jewish Roots of the Christian Faith

Although the roots of Christianity run deep into Hebrew soil, many Christians are regrettably uninformed about the rich Hebrew heritage of the church. This volume delineates the link between Judaism and Christianity, between the Old and the New Testament, and calls Christians to reexamine their Hebrew roots so as to effect a more authentically biblical lifestyle. As an introduction to the world of Hebrew thought, Our Father Abraham is biblical, historical, and cultural in nature. At the same time, the writing is personal and passionate, reflecting Marvin Wilson's own spiritual pilgrimage and his extensive dialogue with Jews. The book develops a historical perspective on the Jewish origins of the church, sets forth the importance and nature of Hebrew thought, discusses how the church can become more attuned to the Hebraic mind-set of Scripture, and offers practical suggestions for interaction between Jews and Christians.

The study questions at the end of each chapter enhance the book's usefulness as a text and also make it suitable for Bible-study and discussion groups. All Christians and Jews too will profit from Wilson's sensible treatments of biblical texts, his thorough understanding of both the Christian and the Jewish faith, and his honest historical analysis of the general failure of the Christian church to acknowledge and understand its relation to Judaism.

I hav been a born again Christian for 8 years and in the last few years the LORD has really been opening my eyes to Israel, the Jews and the Gentiles(me) and what our specific roles are and the outcome for all our futures when we are in Christ Jesus. This BOOK has been the exact tool I have been praying for so I can understand what 1st century ISRAEL was like as a culture so I can understand who and why the books of the BIble were written and understand it from a JEWISH perspective and not from a western canadian culture perspective so I can see the freedom my Savior came to give me Loving JESUS is a personal relationship not a religious duty of rules and laws and regulations, I do the things I do(Go to a good Bible believing church,Read my Bible and pray EVERYDAY, have my purse equipped with gospel tracts to give to the people the Holy Spirit asks me too and encourage others in the LORD, Share my testimony of what the LORD has done in my life)because I LOVE HIM AND I WANT TO KNOW HIM BETTER EVERYDAY I came to Him for salvation from my sins and I fall more in love with Him everyday! Walking with Jesus is not striving and failing, striving and failing.......I rest in the fact He is changing my life daily as I read His word and pray and I listen and obey Him The Bible is a Jewish book, and JESUS is my JEWISH Savior and I want to know the roots of my Faith :) This book has been a blessing to my life!!!!!

This book is an awesome book for studying out roots. I run a local bible college and we will use it as a textbook. The Author is very knowledgeable and the context is a serious one. It is not a light read, but in what I do I don't want light read. It is time that Christians are challenged about their belief and that we go back to our real roots and find out how it worked in Jesus' day.Dr. C

I read OUR FATHER ABRAHAM from cover to cover.I found the answers to several questions I had and it explained many things I hadn't thought of yet. It was an enjoyable read and is a great place to start on a quest for roots of faith. I will keep it in my library because I'm sure I will refer back to it several time in the future.

This book is clearly over-rated in its assertion to "bridge" the gap. It is clearly a politically minded piece of work with a politically motivated theology built into its premise. The conclusions are reached both poorly and falsely. Here's a quick summary, "God belongs to us Jews - give him back. We invented him, we want him back." News for your Mr. Wilson, God created "all" men, and "all" men not just the Jews. And while Judaism played a significant role in God's plan (not God in the Jews plan), this does not allow you to label those who don't share your view points as those with "anti-Judaism or Neo-Marcionism" beliefs.I am sorry such a wonderful concept was so poorly executed.JWW

Clearly written and shows the author's passion for Jewish traditions and history and how they influence Christian faith. Having had the author as a professor, I encourage biblical scholars and anyone interested in history to read this book. It's fascinating, and sincere.

There is much to recommend in Dr. Wilson's book. The fact that he teaches two tracks, one for Jews and another for Gentiles reduces its value in my opinion. As a start in understanding the "Hebrew roots of the faith",this book is useful. For a view that there is one God with one set of rules for life this book should be balanced with books that teach that the Torah provides a way of life for all of those who love Him.

Christianity has been called "transcultural Judaism" and this book explains why. It is an excellent treatment of the "mother" faith and the early period of its offshoot sect, the Nazarenes. The Nazarenes, later to be universally known as Christians, were originally almost completely Jewish and the New Covenant was written by and for these Jews. The only problem that I had with the book was the authors use, in footnotes, of a few utterly apostate sources (ie. John Shelby Spong). Overall it is a wonderful book that deserves a wide reading in todays Church.

This will be an eye-opening book and an important read for anyone who is interested in properly interpreting the words of Jesus as they would have been understood by his Jewish audience. The author encourages the reader to take a fresh look at the words of Jesus by remaining true to the "cultural-historical" method of biblical exegesis, which in turn demands that interpreters attempt to understand Jesus' words in their original Hebraic context. This is the same method of exegesis that is taught in seminaries but is rarely applied honestly by Christians; as a result, the teachings of Jesus have remained buried. The author does a remarkable job in a short time of effectively introducing the reader to Hebraic thought at the time of Jesus and whetting his or her appetite for more. This book will begin to radically change your understanding of Jesus' words. I can't recommend it enough!
