This core kit includes everything you need for Wanda Sanseri's "Spell to Write and Read" curriculum. The five components work together for a unified language arts program for ages 4-6, or as remedial/reinforcement work for any age. Based on the principles of internalizing (spelling), recognizing (reading), composing (writing) and comprehending (understanding) words, The Spell to Write and Read book uses logical progression and multi-sensory instruction to help children learn to spell. Seventy phonograms and twenty-eight spelling rules are the basis for everything else learned, and are presented in a positive manner instead of filled with exceptions to the rules. Each lesson is filled with historical and spelling notes on each concept, as well as examples, demonstrations, and activities for each new rule or phonic. This overall teacher's manual replaces Teaching Reading at Home & School as the companion to the spelling list in Wise Guide for Spelling.
The WISE Guide for Spelling contains over 2000 core words plus derivatives, divided into lots of twenty that are organized by spelling difficulty. Preliminary warm up activities and teasers, example sentences, spelling rules, and enrichments are included for each lesson. Students are to build their "own textbook", with this guide overseeing the process; lists refer back to the phonogram rules and steps in Spell to Write and Read to help provide context in teaching.
A set of 70 basic phonogram cards are provided, as well as a phonogram CD to assure proper pronunciation. The front of each card has a phonogram typed in lower case, while the back gives information, including handwriting helps. A set of small spelling rule cards includes two sided cards; a graphic on the front illustrates the spelling rule, while the back contains the actual rule, example words, and additional valuable information. I've been homeschooling for 16 years and I've never found a more complicated system to teach phonics and reading. This program is based on the Orton-Gillingham method so I thought it would be good choice for my son with learning disabilities. If he were my only child, perhaps this would have worked. As is, the lessons were very time consuming and not very well organized.
You know a system is complicated when they have an entire seminar on how to teach it!
There are other reading/spelling programs based on Orton-Gillingham that are much simpler than this program and just as effective.

we just began using this product but so far we love it. it is a spelling, writing, penmanship program and can be used for so much more. with my 17 year-old we began using the spelling words as starters for creative writing. our penmanship has already improved. lots of work and a lot to learn but very worth it. i use it with my 6 and 17 year-old at the same time

I already liked this product when I was teaching K-1 and now am excited to use it for my own children in homeschooling. I really like the way it makes sense out of our English language with the phonograms and rules. Since it can be overwhelming and confusing to use at first (I had the priviledge of attending a workshop when I first used it), it might be an idea to make a DVD of how to use it and thereby make it more user friendly for mothers and teachers. Overall, a great program that I have already shared with numerous friends. Thanks!

I love this program! I've been homeschooling for 16 years and this is by far the best spelling program I've ever seen. It is true that more than one rule is presented in the each word list. You and your children will be thrilled as they learn to discern which rule applies to the various words. This program make your children (and you perhaps) really think about how to spell, not just rely on learning one rule and applying it again and again. I began my home school journey thinking "whole language" and have become a committed phonics teacher. I don't think you'll be disappointed with this program. Do be sure to learn how to use it properly, it will be worth your time!

The core phonics of this program is great but the delivery is AWFUL. It is not user friendly, requires a lot of mom prep and the most frustrating part is the combination of words used in any one lesson. Even though SWR focuses on pure phonics the word lists are compiled by the Dolch lists (most commonly used words)... ie there is no one spelling rule taught per lesson. My kids were overwhelmed. I threw the towel in on this program after a few weeks (and yes I understood the program for anyone who would tell me I just needed to muddle through and learn it) and tried a few others instead (including Natural Speller and Sequential Spelling). We finally found All About Spelling which uses the same hard core phonics base but is organized in a super easy to use/teach, easy to learn format. I Hands Down recommend All About Spelling instead of SWR (it has all the good from SWR AND is organized logically).

BUY THIS PROGRAM! I recommend it to all my clients. This phenomenal product is NOT just for 4-6 year olds! (That's a typo.) It works for 3 year olds right on through to adults, ESPECIALLY those with learning challenges like dyslexia. My first students were in Grade 5. I am a parent, teacher, homeschooler-to-be, tutor and literacy specialist, and this is hands-down the best literacy program I've ever encountered. It is not a flashy program, but it WORKS SO WELL! After learning this program, English is no longer comprised of words that 'break the spelling rules', rather 98% of the most commonly used words follow the 21 rules and 70 phonograms (sounds) presented here. Students feel empowered as spelling makes sense, reading fluency increases and students are able to accurately decode and spell difficult words that are not even in their vocabulary. In as little as five years, students can be reading and correctly spelling college level words!A warning parents/teachers - this program takes a major time investment to learn (I spent 100 hours), but those hours are SO worth it as your teaching efficiency will increase by 1000% or more. Don't feel overwhelmed; persevere - The instructions are so easy to follow that someone with zero teaching experience can also become an expert! Your time is definitely worth it!
