Baker Books Philippians: Understanding the Bible Commentary Series

The Understanding the Bible Commentary Series helps readers navigate the strange and sometimes intimidating literary terrain of the Bible. These accessible volumes break down the barriers between the ancient and modern worlds so that the power and meaning of the biblical texts become transparent to contemporary readers. The contributors tackle the task of interpretation using the full range of critical methodologies and practices, yet they do so as people of faith who hold the text in the highest regard. Pastors, teachers, and lay people alike will cherish the truth found in this commentary series.

The letter from Paul commonly called 'Philippians' is also known as "the epistle of joy" and is a thank you note to the believers at Phillipi for their help in his hour of need, while also extending exhortations to the Philippians on Christian unity. His central thought is simple: Only in Jesus are real joy and unity possible. This commentary pulls the rich truth from this letter and makes it live for us today.

This is my 2nd book in this commentary series. I really like the layout and they are very informative without being super technical. I'm not a NIV translation fan, so I'd read the passage in my NLT and then the commentary on that passage and it worked out great.
