Young's classic 3-volume commentary engages in a line-by-line exegesis of the Book of Isaiah, setting interpretation firmly in the context of Isaiah's archaeological, cultural, and intellectual background. Young's conclusions are theologically conservative, and though he believes Isaiah to be a unified, single-author book, he respectfully interacts with opposing views. Includes bibliographies and indexes. Volume 1 covers chapters 1-18; Volume 2 looks at chapters 19-39; Volume 3 surveys chapters 40-66.

These books are well written, but require the reader to have an understanding of English grammar. If you are willing to advance your grammar skills this is a must have. The author is well versed in other persons interpretations and gives sound reasons for agreeing or disagreeing with them. Anyone who wants an indepth perspective of the richness of Isaiah this set is for you. I'm grateful to have acquired this work at such a great price!

Dr. Edward Young has produced a comprehensive, verse-by-verse, three volume commentary on the Old Testament Book of Isaiah. He states that the purpose of his work is to let Isaiah speak for himself, and to "endeavor to understand what he says." His target audience is the minister and Sunday School teacher, so linguistic and technical discussions are often relegated to footnotes. At the same time, his scholarship is sound, and he cites a rich variety of resources, both ancient and modern. The translation of Isaiah which he uses in this commentary is his own. His theological stance is conservative, and the commentary presents Isaiah as the work of a single author. While he argues in favor of this view, he acknowledges that many modern scholars disagree, and he devotes Appendix II of volume 2 to a discussion of their viewpoints. In my own role as a an Adult Sunday School Class teacher, I find his exposition to be useful and relevant, without going too far over my head. I wish there were more commentaries like this.

This is a great verse by verse comprehensive insight into the book of Isaiah. Out of a few different commentaries that I've looked into for my study on Isaiah this will be my preferred choice. It's very readable and enjoyable for any student or Bible teacher as well.

Goes really in depth-breaks up each part/word of the verse. This author takes the assumed position that Isaiah had a single author (Isaiah).

I truly enjoyed this three volume commentary. It is an in-depth line-by-line commentary but is rarely dull. My only problem (very minor problem) is it some times jumps to quickly from Israel to the Church.

Mr. young's commentary possesses a refeshing degree of objectivity. While dealing with care and precision throughout Isaiah, he purposefully presents varying viewpoints on difficult passages, with evaluation and conclusions well founded. His textual scholarship is on par with Delitzsch, and historical context as good as Barnes, while being more readable than either. Excellent commentary!
