Reading this book is like a long chat with a friend or a mentor over coffee. It's not preachy but definitely preaches. Jen shares her story with honesty, humor and passion and her words are a prophetic voice that so many of us need to hear.

Jen Hatmaker grew up in the Evangelical Church - Pastor's Daughter, attended a Baptist College, became a Pastor's wife. They had a comfortable, middle-class life when she asked God to make her faith more passionate - and BANG - He opened her eyes up to an entirely new perspective on living. Verses she had read her whole life suddenly came alive in new ways. All of that stuff in the Gospels about Jesus loving the least of these and His living among them came alive for her as she heard God tell her, "You do feed souls, but twenty-four thousand of my sheep will die today because no one fed their bellies; eighteen thousand of them are my youngest lambs, starving today in a world with plenty of food to go around. If you truly love Me, you will feed my lambs. My people are crumbling and dying and starving, and you're blessing blessed people and dreaming about your next house."
This book takes us through her journey from a comfortable but dry middle-class church life, through a scary transition time when friends thought they were crazy, to their starting an inner-city church in Austin, Texas where they now live in relationship with their neighbors and do what would be considered very unconventional things show those neighbors the love of Christ in very real, practical ways.
Jen Hatmaker is honest and genuine and funny. I loved this book. I had to read it in small chunks and let it soak in, even though I didn't want to put it down. There were so many times when I wanted to share quotes of hers with someone because what she was saying was so profound. Our small group is going to read this book together so we can all share in Jen's experience of a new perspective on Christian living. This book is a life-changer.

Jen is teaching "works" salvation!

Jen says: "This is how grave the gospel's challenge is: 'Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me' (Matthew 25:40). It is as simple as it is radical. If every believer obeyed accordingly, I daresay we would become the answer to all that ails society. These are the words by which we are sent, but wondrously, they are also the words by which we are saved." p. 101 of INTERRUPTED.
Jen has is backward. The Gospel is not a "challenge", it is an invitation. It is what Jesus did for us - not what we can do "for Him"! We are saved "unto good works" not "by them"! What "ails society" is the sin that separates us from God, and we cannot "fix" that by our good works!
I do not recommend this book to anyone!

Jen Hatmaker is a woman I would love to have coffee with! I cant even imagine in what directions our conversation would go. She has some of the exact same thoughts i have and also some that have really challenged me to think beyond myself.This book is honest, and passionate and full of living for the least of these. This book wasnt a quick read for me, I wanted to take my time with it and soak it up!At the end of the sections she made a list of what books, films or people influenced her during that time of discovery in her life. Most of them I knew of and enjoyed!Its just an honest portrayal of a woman finding out how to truly love people with a passion, and that passion leaps off the pages! I loved that every once in while her husband would chime in with his perspective, that really made it feel like a conversation. I cant help being positive about this book. I really think Jens book will challenge a lot of people, I know she challenged me. Definitely worth reading over and over again.
