I have only read a few chapters, but it is difficult to put down. It is a clean book and I don't have to "skip over" bad words or insinuated ideas. I can hardly wait to find time to sit and read it without having to stop after just a few chapters.

This book is a new kind of fantasy for any book lover. D. Barkley Briggs is a master story teller and crafts an artful book filled with perilous journeys, flawed characters, great background stories and an amazing world of Nymphs, Fairies and other mythical creatures. Has the feel of Arthurian legends and fantastical myths. A great story that I would recommend to anyone wanting a great read.

This story has such a depth to it, unlike many fantasy novels these days. The characters are likable, the descriptions vivid, and the concepts intriguing. I would like to read it again simply to think more deeply about identity and destiny! I would recommend it whether you think you like fantasy or not!

Hayden and Ewan recently moved to rural Missouri. Their mother recently passed away, and they are grieving her loss and the loss of their old home. Hayden has been assigned the job of clearing the briar patch, and Hayden, for fun, has been clearing it by cutting tunnels into it. His brother Ewan offers to help one day. As they are working, four ravens approach carrying something. The birds drop their cargo in the briar patch and vanish. Hayden and Ewan discover four tubes holding scrolls. Each reads the same: You have been chosen for a life of great purpose. Adventure awaits you in the hidden lands. The boys search for the birds and discover a stone arch with strange carvings on it. An arch that is a portal to another world. The Book of Names is a clever, intriguing story. Briggs does a wonderful job of crafting his storyworld. His characters are real, with faults and fears. My favorite character is Creed and his magical sword that will not allow him to tell a lie. Briggs story is filled with wonderful parallels that really get you thinking about life. This book is a great choice for fantasy lovers. I cant wait for the sequel.

I happen to be a fantasy lover, one who sets Tolkien and C.S. Lewis on a pedestal of sorts as the ultimate in Christian speculative fiction. So it is always a pleasure to find another gem such as The Book of Names, one of the best fantasies I've read in recent years. Hadyn and Ewan Barlow are pulled through an ancient portal into the world of Karac Tor, and the reader is pulled in just as well. The title, Book of Names, may seem a bit confusing until discovering that this is much akin to The Book of Life that is revealed in Revelations. This high fantasy contains names and stories that are reminiscent of Norse, Celtic, Anglo-Saxon legends, including a bit of the Arthurian tales. A meeting of High adventure fantasy with modern-day teens, it is a tales for teenagers, but very definitely also appealing to adults. While the story itself is enthralling, there are many truths hidden within the tale, much for a Christian reader to chew on. I highy recommend it.

I enjoy a good fantasy story, something that can whisk me away and let me get absorbed in another time or place and separate myself from my reality for a little while. I have found that in The Lord Of The Rings, Chronicles of Narnia and even Sharon Hinck's Sword of Lyric series (better known as The Restorer series) and now I can add D. Barkley Briggs Legends of Karac Tor series. I quickly became immersed in the characters - 4 brothers moving to a new place with their dad, trying to adjust to life since the death of mom. The two oldest boys get sucked into another place through a portal on their new property... and then they find out that they are supposed to be "The Champions" for this place. All they want is to get home, some people are trying to help them while some don't want them to go - and there in starts the major conflict... This book deals with many issues that I find incredibly important including the significance of your name and what it means and also finding your place and your giftings in the body of Christ. Dean addresses these issues in an eye-opening way that makes you stop and think about it. Well written with amazing attention to detail in his new world "Karac Tor" - I highly recommend this book for any fantasy lover (or enjoyer, or dabbler, etc...)!

The Book of Names by D. Barkley Briggs is not what I expected. Im not sure exactly what I expected when I cracked the cover. The title reminded me of one of those books you pick up when youre expecting a baby so you can try to choose a name for your child that has some meaning. However, what I got was a wonderfully crafted fantasy read that transported me through a present-day portal into another world. By the side of teenaged hero brothers, Hadyn and Ewan Barlow, this easily readable adventure brought to life the meticulously crafted land of Karac Tor.My biggest gripe is that this is the first in a series. I dont want to be hooked on another series. Unfortunately, that is impossible with this book. It is a thoroughly enjoyable novel for young adults as well as the young at heart.
