This book gives one of the best explanations of God's sovereignty that I have ever read. It is such a good book that we will buy a copy for all of our teen children and go through it during our family devotions. This is good for everyone even if you are not going through difficulty right now. It can help you to counsel and encourage those who are suffering and the things you learn will help you in your own future sufferings. Get this book!

Jerry Bridges, likely known for his popular book "The Pursuit of Holiness," is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. After thorough enjoying (and being convicted by, in a good way) this title, I came across "Trusting God: Even When Life Hurts" as a free audiobook download from ChristianAudio.com. Needless to say, it's one of my favorite books in its category and one that I can immediately recommend to any Christian reader.
Trusting God is a very practical book with a wide application to many different life scenarios. While Bridges admits from the onset that he does not intend this book for deep suffering and trauma, it does boast a broad reach for nearly any other difficult circumstance that life can experience.
The author starts out with a question asked two ways: "Can you trust God?" and "Can you trust God?" He then gives reasons why we can answer "yes" to both with confidence and certainty. The basis of trusting God, according to Bridges, is threefold: His sovereignty, wisdom, and love. These are three threads that weave throughout the book as he examines a breadth of content areas we often have difficulty trusting in to show that God is worthy of our trust.
As is the case with his other work I've read, Bridges is very easy to read and is even surprisingly engaging. He writes almost like an old friend writing a letter addressed personally to you, with warmth and honesty. Yet at the same time, I never found him intellectually shallow or wanting. It's clear from the first pages that he knows God deeply and personally, and he rests firmly in Scripture to determine whether his ideas and application are true.
This would be a fantastic companion to Robert J. Morgan's "The Promise", a treatise on Romans 8:28 - how God works all things together for good. I highly recommend this book.

Important book on how to view suffering

In "Trusting God", Jerry Bridges tackles some big and important questions. How are we to approach the hurdles life throws our way? How can we trust God in spite of difficult circumstances? How are we to trust him even when life hurts?
These questions all give us pause to think at some point in our Christian life. And there are many books which aim to help us deal with these issues. This book stands apart. Bridges points in an uncommon direction for finding help: the sovereignty of God. Most don't like to think of God's being behind the very difficulties that make life so painful.
Bridges is under no illusions as to his ability to provide all possible answers to this age old dilemma. He offers hope but the answers aren't easy or glib. He doesn't reveal how he has personally conquered all such doubts and how his life story provides the answers to ours. Instead I picture him sitting down, opening his big black Bible and applying Scripture with care. This book is a Bible study, that will pay great dividends to those who dig in and hear what the Bible has to say about trusting God.
Three themes are explored in depth, in "Trusting God". The author explains:
"In the arena of adversity, the Scriptures teach us three essential truths about God -- truths we must believe if we are to trust Him in adversity. They are: God is completely sovereign. God is infinite in wisdom. God is perfect in love. (pg. 16-17)"
Most of the book explores God's sovereignty since so many Christians today are unfamiliar with the term and the concept. Bridges carefully shows the extent of God's control over this planet and each of our lives. If you are unfamiliar with the Bible's witness to God's sovereignty you will be amazed at the number of Bible verses and passages that are examined.
God's rule over all things gives His children hope. God knows what He is doing, and this circumstance is not out of His control. Jerry Bridges explains, "There is no agonizing by God, no hoping He has made the right decision, no wondering what is really best for us. God makes no mistakes." (pg. 126)
After exploring the three themes of God's sovereignty, wisdom and love, Bridges deals with how we can apply these Bible truths to our lives. The author's great confidence in God, by the end of the book, becomes infectious. I particularly appreciated his insight into Christian's common obsessing over knowing God's will for us when it comes to a decision. I think his advice on this point is worth repeating at some length:
"Consider the book of Acts. The only reference to the disciples seeking to determine the will of God occurs in the choosing of Matthias to succeed Judas. From that point onward, it is a record of God's guiding His people.... God does have a plan for each of us. He has given each of us different gifts, abilities, and temperaments and has placed each of us in the body of Christ according to His will.... We do have a responsibility to make wise decisions or to discover the will of God, whichever term we may prefer to use. But God's plan for us is not contingent upon our decisions. God's plan is not contingent at all. God's plan is sovereign. It includes our foolish decisions as well as our wise ones." (pg. 181-182)
Isn't that perspective refreshing? Bridges shares his heart in this book. It doesn't appear to have been an easy one for him to write. You can tell he's been through a lot personally and has shared the grief of many who have suffered even more. His personal accounts and illustrations add life to the book. His openness about his sin and failures to trust God is inspiring. He writes with an earnestness and confidence that can only be accompanied by prayers for those of us who would read this important book.
This book will be challenging at times, but the effort is rewarding. I encourage you to pick up a copy of this book and spend some time learning from Jerry Bridges as he takes you through the Bible. You will be better equipped to face the suffering that is in store for all of us. And you will find yourself trusting God, even when life hurts.

In this book, Trusting God, the author, Jerry Bridges, delves deep into the heart of God, and His sovereignty power and love for His children. He shows us, that even through the toughest of times, we must trust God, even when life hurts us the most, we must hold on, and never let go of God. We learn that through it all, God is in control! Bridges teaches us about three main things about God; His sovereignty, His love, and His Wisdom. Having one without the other two, will leave you right where you already were. If you are able to learn all three, your life will be changed forever! The author presents God to be a God that is both powerful and loving, and also both sovereign and wise! What more could we, His children want from our dear Heavenly Father? We should place our complete and sovereign trust in Him, in ALL things. Life might hurt some times, but God is good ALL the time, and He will never leave us, nor forsake us. Jerry Bridges does a truly wonderful job of making that connection to the reader. This book is a must read for anyone going through a rough time in their life, or for someone who just needs reminding that God is always there for us, and that He will never put on us more than we can bear. Anyone who has read The Pursuit of Holiness will recognize the familiar, plain-English style and sense of Jerry Bridges. In the 20th Anniversary edition of Trusting God, Dr. Bridges takes the very deep & extremely important doctrine of Gods sovereignty & lays it out clearly, simply, well within the grasp of the newest convert, yet also satsifying for the most mature theologian.Bridges writes, The purpose of this book is twofold: First, I desire to glorify God by acknowledging His sovereignty and His goodness. Second, I desire to encourage Gods people by demonstrating from Scripture that God is in control of their lives, that He does indeed love them, and that He works out all the circumstances of their lives for their ultimate good (pg. 9). In this, Dr. Bridges accomplishes his goal.This book is categorized as Christian Living for the very good reason that its approach to the circumstances daily faced by the individual believer is both practical & personal; yet, the truths presented concerning the attributes of God would make this book equally at home in the Theology section.Those whose theology tends toward an emphasis upon man's free will can no doubt gain a better understanding of how Reformed thinkers generally view the goodness of Gods sovereignty; & those of us who stand firmly on the doctrines of grace will find a very compassionate presentation of this subject, which by Gods grace, may temper us away from a tendency to approach Gods sovereignty like the proverbial bull in a china shop, just because we see the urgent need to proclaim this truth in American pulpits today.A must-read for those who have never read it; a must-reread for those who already have. The sovereignty of God this book proclaims is more relevant today than it was twenty years ago during its 1st printing. I highly commend this book to anyone with a desire to worship God more deeply & commune with Him more intimately.

I recommend few books from the Christian Life section, but this is one of them. Aside from a balanced perspective on God's Soverignty and Human Freedom, it shows us the purposes God has in our suffering (or, at least, that he has purposes) with a very biblical understanding. One of the first books I recommend to my church members.

I am only beginning my journey with the Lord, yet I know that I have to TRUST HIM. Now knowing it and the actual knowledge of what I am doing is totally different. This book was a great aid to me, in more easily understanding what I am putting into practice in my everyday life. Faith with knowledge is so important to living in the Lord.

Jerry Bridges has written an excellent book! It is very practical, not just a theological treatise. I used it in conjunction with the study guide to teach a Sunday School class after a difficult season in our church. Shortly after we started, a couple lost a son in an automobile accident. That is just one of the issues we addressed with Jerry's help. I highly recommend this book for your personal study or in a small group.
