The structure of this book, its adherence to the church calendar, and the variety of its short Bible readings all are a tremendous help to building depth and consistency in my prayer life.

A previous reviewer noted that the edition of this book which she read used the TNIV for its Bible readings. The current (copyright 2013) edition uses the 2011 NIV.

This book also is available in a compact version, but the type size in that smaller version is much too small for me.

I love this work. This devotional allows you to follow the church calendar through the year if desired, but you can just as easily use the current date if you wish. It uses well-chosen scripture along with helpful devotional direction. The result is a much richer, more 'efficient' prayer experience for the reader. It employs a most useful format that isn't pushy and doesn't just do my praying for me. Instead, it functions more like a 'devotional GPS' pointing the way for me to the highway in my prayer time. Not that this is some kind of 'speed-prayer' devotional, but rather, I find it often helps me get to my most enjoyable and edifying attitude of prayer much more readily and consistently than certain other times when praying without it. It's also a great tool for Lectio Divina, or Praying the Bible.

I've had this book for about a year and a half and it's still in great shape, especially considering how often and long it has been in my hands or jostling around in a tote bag and even functioning as a coaster on my coffee table now and again. The cover is soft synthetic leather-like material with a matte finish in a nice tan color. The text block is sewn so it lies flatter on a surface or drapes comfortably over your hands. I found the font comfortably readable and the layout both functional and attractive. The paper is not tissue-thin but there is definitely ghosting although I personally did not find it distracting like some other books and bibles I've seen. The page edges are white, not gilded, so if you have it imprinted you might consider dry stamping (if available) unless you want the imprint to really stand out. It has one tan ribbon marker and tan headbands. The TNIV translation is used in most if not all of the quotations in the book and although it is not my preferred translation for study, I think it works fine in this application.

I give this devotional a hearty recommendation for both its form as well as its content. I wish the price were about 20% lower, but then again, I think everything is overpriced these days. I gave it four stars on meeting my expectations because I would have liked to have seen a more 'grown up' translation, or at least a more interesting one, but that's just a personal pet peeve, and as I said, the TNIV used here is fine, but just fine. All the best, Beloved Friends!
