Random House, Inc These Boots Weren't Made for Walking

Willing to make the necessary sacrifices---even skipping the occasional latte---to ensure career success, 31-year-old Cassidy Cantrell "invests" in a chic pair of boots, certain they'll make a spectacular impression and help seal the deal on a long-anticipated promotion from her Seattle employer.

But reality tromps all over her expectations. Cassie's job is abruptly eliminated---and her love life obliterated, when her longtime boyfriend dumps her for a "friend." Her self-esteem in tatters, Cassie limps home to the resort town she once so eagerly fled---only to find her recently divorced mother transformed into a gorgeous fifty-something babe with a thriving social life. Cassie wrestles with envy and apathy as she considers the dismal shape of her own physique and romantic prospects. What will it take for her to jump back into life and regain her stride?

This sassy and hilarious novel leads readers on a romp through the wilds of relationships, romance, career, and spirituality, revealing that, while God's plans may look drastically different than our own, it'll always be a perfect fit.

I have read Melody Carlson's Notes from a Spinning Planet series and enjoyed each one. However I found this book to have no redeeming value. Most of the book is spent talking about non christian exploits of acquaintances and family. I found nothing humorous in this tale and will be careful not to choose another similar book by her.

This book was a lesson in life. Think of others before yourself. My favorite prayer is Lord, let me be a blessing to someone today.

I really enjoyed that this book was both a good story and an easy read. Sometimes it's good to have something not so deep but still get a quality story with a solid Christian message to it. I would have enjoyed a little more chapters and detail at towards the end - it ended at bit quickly for my taste. Since I don't want to spoil it will leave it at that. Overall, I did enjoy this book!

Poor Cassie just got fired...and lost her boyfriend...and moved back home with her divorced mother...and still has to pay for those Valentino boots she splurged on! This series of disappointments plunge Cassie into a mega pity party as she crawls back to her childhood home to lick her wounds. Only home isn't quite what she remembers. Cassie is unable to heal because of increased feelings of jealousy and anger until she discovers that swallowing her pride and taking a few chances are necessary for her to move on. She even finds true love along the way. Melody Carlson's smooth style employs humor and sensitivity to educate the reader that when you've hit rock-bottom, there's no place to go but up! This is not a preachy novel, but rather a chronicle of real struggles that we all face at one time and how a real person feels about and deals with them.

Let me begin by saying I have purchased almost all of Melody Carlson's books and have considered her one of my favorite authors. I am the librarian at my church and I do have tocarefully choose what we put on the shelves. This book will not make the cut. Maybe some of you consider it edgy but I do not consider it clean Christian literature. Unfortunately, I will now be more cautious when choosing a Carlson novel. This one will come out of my pocketbook and into the trash.

Melody Carlson tells the story of Cassie, a 31-year-old who has the perfect job, perfect boyfriend, and perfect credit...until she loses it all in a 2-week period. She spontaneously decides to move back home to be with her lonely mother, only to find that her mother has become a thin, gorgeous woman with a convertible who is dating someone who Cassie went to high school with. Cassie's meltdown that ensues is so funny and so real - I saw myself in Cassie several times. The end was a bit convenient and tidied things up a little too nicely, but I really liked this book. "These Boots Weren't Made For Walking" is a hilarious, wonderful, light read! I actually laughed out loud a few times and found myself nodding my head at Cassie's laments to herself. I have been there, and "Boots" is wonderfully real.

This book was adorable! i think that Carlson did a great job of making her character real! Like one person said b4 me, the middle was a little boring, but it wasn't boring enough to make me quit reading it.

Melody Carlson's foray into chick-lit is quite a departure from her usual dramatic novels but as I have come to expect she has made the transition with style! Cassidy is a realistic and down to earth woman whose world has suddenly become a lot smaller as she is forced to return to her hometown, miserable and lonely. The contrast between Cassidy's downtrodden attitude and appearance is cheekily contrasted with her mother's sexy new image, one more suited to a girl in her twenties than a woman pushing towards sixty. Her antics provide laugh out loud humour for the reader and mortification for Cassidy. While I found the focus on body image emphasized a little too much for my liking, Melody has written an entertaining and, at times, poignant tale of the transformation of a woman a depressed woman and the life changing impact faith and the encouragement of friends and family can have upon a person's self worth. These Boots Weren't Made For Walking is beautifully done!

This book held so much promise but ended up being on the dull side. Cassie's escapades could have been funnier and more exciting but there was too much "telling" the story and not enough "showing" it. The first chapter was great but it did not really get interesting again until about page 190 when Cassie started her new job. The tension between Cassie and her mother played out too long and was wrapped up too quickly. I really enjoyed the scene with mom and all the sisters but it happened too fast. The reconciliation, breaking-up, and new romance was jammed into the ending. I also expected more from a Christian novel than just being clean. Cassie didn't have much of a relationship with God. I really wanted to like this book and it was a nice alternative to secular chick-lit but it lacked spark.

This book was enjoyable from start to finish, although she seemed to wrap it up awfully quick! I could relate to Cassie in so many ways. I loved the workout stories and the bear suit! I could have done without the references to alcohol use, but I'm sure it's realistic in that world.

I know that there will be quite a number of Christian readers who will not like this book. The book is quite edgy so I can understand if some conservative readers might be turned off after reading the first few chapters. However, this is one of the best books I've read this year and I enjoyed it so much, we might have some words if you don't agree with me. (j/k!) I absolutely adored Cassie, her boots, and her story. This is chick lit at its finest. I could not put this book down. You have a character who you grow to love in spite of her flaws. All the elements of a mainstream chick lit book are here plus the added benefit of what it means to be a Christian. Cassie grows and matures throughout the book. The reader goes along for the ride and it's sometimes painful (the gym scenes are torturous) and hilarious at the same time (cougars! and the bear costume!) I really liked Will, he seems like a really good guy, and he also sounds really cute because he's described as being very nice. I did not like Cassie's ex, I'm glad she dumped him, and I cheered when he did. He had a really bad reason for breaking up with her too. The writing in this book is top notch. It is very descriptive and you really get into what it's like to be Cassie and to travel back to her hometown. The first person narrative really gets you into the story. One thing I would mention is that Cassie does drink some alcohol in this book. However she is not drinking to get drunk and she does not even finish her beer. I bring this up because I had problems in another Christian chick lit book that involved drinking. In this book, I did not find the drinking offensive because no one pressures Cassie to drink. It's her choice and it does not become a huge factor that changes her life.Melody Carlson is one of the best authors out there. Her teen books are fantastic, her adult ones even more so enjoyable. This book is VERY HIGHLY recommended. If you love chick lit, I guarantee you will devour this book.

I really enjoyed this book. One aspect of the book which makes is different from other chick lits is that the heroine really struggles with her weight and appearance. And her road to change is very realistic. The book also contains many truly funny scenes that had me laughing out loud. If you enjoy chick lit and its sassy voice, then you will enjoy this book, too.

Thirty-one years old Cassidy Cantrell believes this is the week she visited hell without leaving her hometown of Seattle. After just after spending a fortune on designer boots at exclusive Martollis to enhance her image at work and insure she receives the promotion she expects, her boss informs her that they are downsizing her and a few others; in other words she is fired. Eric, her boyfriend of three years, whom she blames for a recent weight gain as she frets he will never commit to her, abruptly dumps her.Despondent and broke, Cassidy breaks the two commandants of single swingers: thou shall not eat junk food and thou shall not move back in her mothers home in Black Bear. However, mom is very different than when Cassidy left. Back then she was devastated by her husband tossing her aside for a younger chick breaking the first commandment of single swingers; now she has done a complete makeover; she looks great not just as a fifty-five year old as she dates men Cassidys age. Cassidy can take a page out of moms new book or continue to follow moms previous tale of woe. This is an interesting character study of a young woman who goes from all glitter to depressed slob to a full caring well-rounded person. This Christian chick lit story line is fun to follow due to Cassidy who serves as an inspiration for the audience once she gets past her doldrums and begins to reassert herself; her faith is not in your face so that her beliefs enhance the plot. Although the plot has been used countless times since Methuselah was a kid, readers will enjoy Cassidys reusing of her glamour boots not meant for walking.Harriet Klausner

Cassidy Cantrell just bought her first pair of designer boots, which she knows will impress everyone. Shes pretty sure they are going to get her the promotion shes been angling for as well. Little does she know how much her life is about to change. Job problems and boyfriends woes send Cassidy on a search to find herself. She heads home only to find that her normal run-of-the-mill mom has changed, too and Cassidys not sure its for the better. Her desires, such as the boots, reflect the desires of girlie-girls everywhere and make the reader take a closer look at their priorities. At the center of it all is a young woman coming of age. Through Cassidys struggles, the reader will learn the value of faith, friendship and fun.Melody Carlson weaves a light-hearted, entertaining tale about a young woman trying to find her place in the world. Carlson has written over 90 books ranging from childrens works to teen and adult literature. Chick lit fans will love this tale written especially for them.

These Boots Weren't Made for Walking is a fantastic chick lit novel. I tried really hard to delay finishing it until closer to the release date in June, but I couldn't do it. I was too invested in the characters. Poor Cassie has everything go wrong in her life. Everything. And the way she deals with it at first is so realistic. The faith piece is a very light thread, but still there, unlike secular chick lit novels. However, the author does push the envelope a tad in some areas, but it wasn't overly done. I really enjoyed this whole story. The internal dialog is the best I've read to date. You can can tell this author is prolific in her writing. Her stuff is flawless, the voice is perfect, and the story can go for pages with no interaction between Cassie and another character, but her interior monologue is so well done that you don't even notice. The romantic element was also fabulous. I loved it! This is a book I'd read twice! Highly recommended.
