WaterBrook Press Aurora: An American Experience in Quilt, Community, and Craft

Aurora features a legacy of quilts and crafts that tell the story of how pioneers wove together their work, relationships, and faith to build a community and shape the American West. With hundreds of photographs, many historical and never-before published, this beautiful book celebrates the lives of a community that lived out its faith in spare yet splendid ways. For more than twenty years in a time of national turmoil, they successfully tended each other and their neighbors. And what they left behind are simple but unique American treasures:
  • vibrantly-colored quilts and textiles,
  • exquisitely detailed hand-crafted pieces of furniture,
  • musical instruments and music composed and written in blackberry juice ink;
  • a legacy of food and faith and family stories.
Through their love of landscape, their relationships caring for each other and their neighbors, their communal work to meet all their needs and have enough to give away, and through their living faith, these Oregon Aurorans inspire our own legacies and remind us that our lives write today the stories we will all leave behind.

I was hoping this book would have more illustrations of quilts and crafts that my accomplished quilting sister could use. It is more geared for people wanting to read about the history of the area. Not quite what I was looking for.

I picked this book up to look at the beautiful quilts inside but got so much more! I learned so much about the history of that area of Oregon, about the Christian communal society there as well as how amazing the needlework was (and all done by hand).
I enjoyed this book so much and plan to make a trip to Aurora to attend one of the festivals mentioned!

Given as a gift, and recipient liked it. Since I didn't read it, I can't say about the content. I liked the author, having read some of her other books.

I haven't completely finished reading this book, but it is so very interesting. I'm interested in learning more about quilting and who doesn't love "old things". The stories of how they lived their lives in such unity and faith are a real blessing. I'm also intrigued by their ability to reach out to the community while at the same time earn a good living. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who likes a good read.

Most of the books I order are for my church bookclub that meets bi-monthly. I will be handing it out this month for our Nov discussion. However, I have gone through it and was very impressed with both the photographs and the text. It would also make a nice gift to someone interested in the subject.
