Baker Books Foxe's Book of Martyrs

With millions of copies in print, Foxe's Book of Martyrs has become a classic of magnificent courage and faith. This unparalleled volume chronicles the tragic yet triumphant stories of men and women who faced torture and martyrdom rather than deny their vision of truth and of God. Beginning with Jesus Christ, this exceptional historical record traces the roots of religious persecution through the sixteenth century. It examines the heroic lives of great men and women such as John Hus, John Wycliffe, William Tyndale, Anne Askew, Lady Jane Grey, and Martin Luther. John Foxe also knew persecution. Forced to flee from his native England to Europe during Queen Mary's severe persecution of those holding Reformed views, he carefully compiled records of martyred Christians. His writings possess a sense of immediacy and insight into suffering that few "objective" church historians can match. This edition has been streamlined and reorganized by W. Grinton Berry to present work in today's language.

Christianbook.com and this book was recommended to me by a friend. I shopped around but couldn't beat the price.Christianbook.com has so many great products and the prices seem to be the best. Other than having to wait 5 weeks to receive my order, everything was great and I would recommend them.

A must-read for anyone serious about sharing their faith or anyone who is afraid to. We challenge high school youth to at least read the first 100 pages for a taste of what carrying the cross of Christ really means. Reasonably priced for a great gift book.

This book certainly puts our "problems" into perspective. Reading how the early Christians put their faith to the ultimate test is inspiring to say the least. The only problem I have is that it's really tough to read in the "old english", or whatever style of writing it is. It is most certainly not in "today's language".

I have only read a little bit of the book, but it is very good. It is in an old English righting style that as you read you get used to. I personally find the many stories beautiful to know how other believers finished the race so strong, and not by there personal strength, but by God's.

A great book to see what it truly means to be a martyr. Are you a true follower of Jesus? What would you do if your family was in front of you and someone said reject Christ or see them slowly be put to death? If you were tould reject Jesus or take a bullet in the head? See what it was like to be a follower and doer of the word.

A master piece, shows persecution of God's real church and shows how the Catholics killed men who stood up for God's word and wouldn't confess Mary as co-redeemer with our Lord Jesus Christ. A good book to read to encourage you when you go through trials that you are not promised an easy life. Also to evangelize to the unsaved as these counted their life not as important as the gospel, so should we be and not fear man! this book is a real blessing to read and a cheap buy.

The strong, dedicated faith in the one true God these people exhibited during their persecutions is inspirational. Puts in perspective the devotion to Jesus Christ that was and is so very important then and should be just as important today and forever more.
