I agree with Charles Colson, this is probably the best book on Christian Leadership available. Much of what is written in the name of Christian leadership is nothing but the self-advertising and self-promotion of the world. Here is a book that has strong biblical moorings. The attributes that he mentions, that a leader should posses are thoroughly biblical.
highly recommended.
God bless

This is one of those books that I found myself highlighting sentences and thoughts very often. I read it over the vourse of two weeks as my schedule allowed, but slow enough to be able to digest it. I'm looking forward to reading it again. Actually, this is one of those that I will not be loaning out to others. I wholeheartedly reccomend it, but you'll have to buy your one. As a side note, this is the book that originally inspired Dr. John Maxwell to pursue learning and teaching others leadership. In many ways it provided a foundation for his current ministry.

If you are looking for resources which cover every area of leadership, this is the book. I have it on my nightstand and have read and re-read it many times. It encourages those in ministry by exposing the downsides with a witness of better things to come. It is a must for every one who is called into leadership.

Godly leadership is more than being the most qualified to lead. Leaders in Christian ministry must understand and practice servanthood as taught by Jesus. Sanders compares the characteristics of "natural" leadership to spiritual leadership. In "natural" leadership, the emphasis is on power- specifically the ability to get subordinates to do things "they don't want to do" and forcing people to act (27). Spiritual leadership is "influencing others spiritually" (28).
Spiritual leaders must not only possess leadership skills, but be ready and prepared to fight a spiritual battle (53). Sanders reminds readers that "God prepares leaders with a specific place and task in mind" (51). Even though many Christians are not called to a full-time ministry, all Christians are leaders since they influence people (109). Sanders insists on a leadership model in which leadership is "from the top down"-"never" from the "bottom up" (113). This philosophy is consistent with his other statement, "no cross, no leadership" (116). His description of spiritual leadership seems bleak by "natural" standards: a leader "lives with loneliness" (117), "fatigue is the price of leadership" (119), and "no leader lives a day without criticism" (119).
Sanders' leadership model is very biblical in that it reflects the principle of leadership under God's guidance-" Be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid of them! The LORD your God will go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor forsake you" (Deu. 31:6 NLT). Leadership "from the top down" starts with God at the top. God is the Lord over creation, man, and the Sabbath and all is consecrated to Him. Ezekiel 37:23-24 explains, "They will truly be my people, and I will be their God. My servant David will be their king, and they will have only one shepherd. They will obey my regulations and keep my laws." In the same way, leaders should think of themselves as a vessel that is accountable to God.

I listened to the audio version of this book and found it absolutely outstanding - I am going to buy the book to have on my shelf. While the target audience, I believe, was prospective missionaries and I believe many apply it to lay and pastoral leadership in the church, I found the tenets of this book also very applicable as my role as father and husband and spiritual leader of my household. Also, as a Naval officer, it is one of the best books on ANY kind of leadership I have read. The principles are foundational and will be successful in any aspect of your life.

Though written over 40 years ago, this book is still practical and relevant today for Christian leadership. Covering a broad range of topics rather than just a few aspects of leadership, Chambers brings together an array of subjects that will prove beneficial to anyone reading it. The language of the original edition had become rather dated in the opinion of the editors, so three changes were made to bring the content into the 21st century. First, the use of the singular, masculine pronoun has been replaced with wording that addresses both men and women. This change wasn't necessary, but the editors were uncomfortable with the singular, masculine pronouns and other masculine references to people in general. Second, personalities and authorities mentioned by Sanders who were household names in his day are no longer so today. References have been added to provide biographical information. Third, the New International Version of the Bible has been used rather than what was likely the KJV in the original. If you are looking for a good overview of Christian leadership principles, this book is the one to read. It doesn't go into great detail on any of the topics, but it does provide an excellent summary overall. I recommend it.
