Flight of Shadows is the sequel to Broken Angel, also by the same author. In this story, it follows the story of Caitlyn Brown, an Invisible who is required to live under the radar for a variety of reasons. A product of a DNA experiment gone wrong, Caitlyn escaped from Appalachia in search of the one man who would be able to correct the lab-induced deformity she has. But while this is going on, she is also on the run from a bounty hunter who knows that her DNA is a priceless commodity.
In addition to the main story of Caitlyn, it also follows Caitlyn’s two friends, Billy and Theo, who also escaped from Appalachia, and are eagerly looking forward to a pre-arranged reunion with Caitlyn. However, what the two boys don’t realize is that their every move is being monitored by the government in an attempt to locate Caitlyn and capture her for her DNA.
Overall, this book is jam packed with action, from lightning-fast chases through streets and passageways to Caitlyn doing whatever it takes to avoid those who wish to do her harm.

Flight of Shadows by Sigmund Brouwer is the sequel to Broken Angel about Caitlyn Brown. Caitlyn has escaped Appalachia and started a new life working as a maid in a hotel. Billy and Theo are still waiting to meet her so they can seek freedom in the West together. Mason has emerged from his on personal hell with one less eye and even deeper madness and darkness in his soul. Pierce hasn't given up the search for Caitlyn, especially after his failure in Appalachia. If you haven't read Broken Angel, go do it now! You must read it in order to fully enjoy this book and understand the characters' history together. When Caitlyn is threatened on the job, she is forced to expose her secret, which brings her a new ally, Razor, who she's not sure if she can trust, but feels strongly drawn toward. Brouwer has set the players on a chessboard in this book. Caitlyn is the king, who everyone wants to own or protect. Mason is a rook, smashing anything in his path to revenge, Pierce is the bishop moving smoothly through each step of the game, and Razor is the knight whose moves are never expected or in a straight line. Brouwer ratchets up the tension even more in this book, with Caitlyn constantly in danger, and the reader has no idea who to trust. There were many pages I read with my hand over my mouth and forgetting to breathe. I have to admit that I am a bit disappointed that Brouwer has ended the series here, but he did an excellent joy tying up loose ends. With this amount of talent and the ability to create such breathtaking surprises, Brouwer is definitely an author to watch.

Flight of Shadows by Sigmund Brouwer
I like to read a variety of books—mystery, suspense, children’s, fantasy, paranormal, sci-fi, young adult, mainstream and Christian. I chose this book because the description said Christian, young adult, speculative fiction. This is the only Sigmund Brouwer book I have read, but I did not like his style of writing in this novel. He takes whole paragraphs for description and background instead of interweaving and sprinkling it in naturally. Perhaps the sentence structure and group titles (Outsiders, Influentials, Enforcers, etc.) work for this age group, but it didn’t work for me. While the action picked up about half-way through the book, really the only reason I made myself finish reading was hoping the story would get better and give a proper and thorough review.
Maybe if I had read Broken Angel (the prequel to Flight of Shadows) the story would have been easier to follow. As it was, I had a hard time keeping track of all the characters, their actions, and storylines. Caitlyn is the main character and the result of an experiment with genetic DNA codes. She tries to blend in and hide her deformity, trying to decide if it is a blessing or a curse. Jordan and Charmaine are the scientists who originally worked on the Genesis project, the one that performed the DNA experiments. Jordan tried to rescue Caitlyn from being a science experiment, but the two ended up separated and left Caitlyn on her own. Theo and Billy rescued Caitlyn from drowning in one of her attempts to escape a bounty hunter named Mason. Theo and Billy seem to be the only ones who accept Caitlyn unconditionally.
Now on the Outside, Caitlyn is running from Everett—someone who lives in a hotel where she cleaned rooms, from Mason the bounty hunter, Pierce Carson from the NI agency, the military, and Charmaine who wants to continue the DNA research and experiments now that she knows Caitlyn survived. Then there is Razor who seems to help Caitlyn, but you’re never really sure whose side he is on.
I read the story from beginning to end, but was never drawn in. There seemed to be three to four different viewpoints going on, but I don’t think the characters had enough of a distinct voice to be able to follow the transitions smoothly. When the same scene is written from different viewpoints, Brouwer spent too much time retelling descriptions and dialogue. There were some suggestive scenes that I did not expect and did not appreciate finding in what was supposed to be a Christian young adult book. In fact, the author describes everything Mason the bounty hunter did in such a disturbing and gruesome manner that I would not recommend this book to young adults and I would caution adults and Christians both. I do not plan on reading anything else by Sigmund Brouwer.

I love science fiction. When Christ found me over 10 years ago, I had a really hard time letting go of some of my old favorite books because they no longer fit with my world view. So, when I come across “Christian” science fiction, I do a little happy dance.
This book, Flight of Shadows, lived up to my expectations, mostly. I did not know going into it that it was the second in a series. I have the first one now checked out from the library and plan on starting in on it this week. Lucky for me, the way that this book is written, it doesn’t matter (much) that I haven’t read the first one. I think that the character development in the first part of the book would have been a lot easier to follow had I read Broken Angel first, but I was still able to get the plot and the characters without it.
The near-future world that Brouwer has created is fascinating. It makes you think about the state of the nation without being obnoxious about it. The explanations of the elements of the world are just that, explanations, without being preachy about what we’re doing wrong.
The characters in the book are well developed and consistent. The plot is a little challenging to get into at first, but it’s well worth it. The overall writing style is tight, staying within the correct perspective of each character and providing just enough detail. My only complaint is that I would have liked to see more where the character’s beliefs lie, but I think that may be more expressed in the first book. I give this book four stars and can’t wait to read more by Sigmund Brouwer. Thank you to WaterBrook Press for sending me this book for review.

“Flight of Shadows” is a science fiction book that takes place in a post-apocalyptic America. There is even a large section of America that has seceded and has formed its own nation, an ultra-religious society called Appalachia. Our main character is Caitlyn, who, because of genetic manipulation, is valuable to many sects of people in Appalachia and in America. Unfortunately, she doesn’t know that. All she knows is that she is being chased.
And, really, that is what this story is about. This girl being chased. Being chased by her old friends (who helped her escape Appalachia—then she ditched them), by her new friends (who try to help her but she runs off), by the good guys (who want to help her but don’t know why she needs help), by the bad guys (who want the secrets inside her), by the other bad guys (who want her because they are turned on by “freaks”), and by the other bad guy (who was hired to take her back to Appalachia).
You would think with all these characters that the reader would actually start to care about them at some point. For me, this never happened. The good guys are jerks, the bad guys are monsters, and the ‘heroine’ is so one dimensional that it is frustrating.
In addition to this book being pretty one dimensional, it is extremely graphic. The violence in this book is off the charts. It starts out early with one of the characters losing an eye in a terrible and grotesque fashion. I will not burden you with any of the details, but it was over the top and not necessary. Plus, there are multiple mentions of rape and child molestation cultural norms. The rich do whatever they want to the poor and the poor just have to take it. It seemed as if that is what the author was trying to write about. The differences between the four classes of people in this society are staggering and very sad. I am sure the author is trying to teach a lesson in social policy or something, but it gets lost in the gore of the rest of the book. He tried to create a vehicle to teach a lesson and got very lost along the way.
The story of the genetic manipulation was interesting and could have gone somewhere. Regrettably, the violence overshadows everything else and makes this book not worth reading.

When I first read the back cover of this book, it sounded REALLY interesting. I liked how the whole, "her genetic secret could change humanity forever." It made me think about the missing link. That this girl was the missing link! I love science fiction, but I don't like it when I have to understand the science aspect of it. The science fiction that helps me understand the science aspect, rather than assuming I do, is that kind I enjoy reading. Sadly, this book didn't help me do that. I honestly couldn't get past the second chapter. I tried so long to read this book, but I just couldn't finish it. It didn't grab me in with the prologue and I was just continually bored with it. The first chapter was good, the part that was in Caitlyn's perspective, but right after it went into a guy's perspective. This guy was in a sewer and he was eating rats and sucking out all their blood for survival. It's just not something I want to read about. I know several people enjoyed this book, and I think that's awesome. This book just wasn't my cup of tea.

What a great, suspenseful book. This is a very fast paced story that grabs your attention from page one. Moral boundaries are tested and broken in this future world and I found myself rooting for Caitlyn as she is constantly on the run, trying to survive. Flight of Shadows is the sequel to Broken Angel, which I have not read, but there is never a moment when I felt lost in this follow up story. A story of the love of friends and family and the desire to be free.

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year! I am so far behind in my reviews it's not even funny! I am taking the last day of this year, 2010 to post a couple book reviews that have been waiting to be posted for the last month or so! That's how busy, crazy it has been around here! So....without further ado.... These two books are a great way to end the year and get right into the new year!
The first one is Flight of Shadows by Sigmund Brouwer. This one was provided by WaterBrook Press free of any charge or obligations. I am not expected to provide a positive review of this book or anything. So everything you read here is of my own opinion.
Flight of Shadows is a great book for the suspense lover. And, I happen to like suspense, so I really liked this book. This book happens to be the sequel to Broken Angel (click this link to view the Prologue and Chapter 1). I have also included the link for Chapter 1 of Flight of Shadows. I haven't had to opportunity to read Broken Angel, but I intend to rectify that. It was a bit difficult to read Flight of Shadows and not have to background to fall on. But that was my fault, not the author.
Flight of Shadows is a well-written novel. Brouwer is brilliant in his usage of imagination, description of his characters and the plot itself. You find yourself completely involved with Caitlyn's plight and flight from those who would harm her for who and what she is. She finds herself relying on the help of one she doesn't trust, to get her to people she believes will help her.
Flight of Shadows will not disappoint you, especially if you have read the prequel, Broken Angel. I intend to find that book, read it and then re-read this one. Don't be surprised if there will be another review!
Sigmund Brouwer has written eighteen books besides Broken Angel and Flight of Shadows. He promotes literacy by giving writing workshops in schools from the Arctic Circle to inner city Los Angeles. He is married to recording artist Cindy Morgan (who happens to be one of my favorite singers!), has two young daughters and they split their time between Tennessee and Alberta, Canada.

Part speculative fiction, part sci-fi, and part political statement, Flight of Shadows by Sigmund Brouwer is the sequel to Broken Angel. Caitlyn Brown's unique, manipulated genetics have the potential to change humanity, but she doesn't want that kind of power or that kind of publicity. Fast paced and futuristic, the bottom line remains a theme to which we long to relate: a father who loves his daughter and wants her to live the life of freedom to which she was born.
Brouwer's imaginative pen gives flight to many unasked questions. What if America was transformed into a city-state society like that of the ancient Greeks? What if religious extremists took over American politics? What if scientists could manipulate DNA to such extremes? Flight of Shadows is a thriller not for the faint of heart.

I was not aware when I chose to read “Flight of Shadows” by Sigmund Brouwer, that I was choosing to read the sequel to Brouwer’s novel “Broken Angel.” If I had previously read “Broken Angel,” I believe that the reading of the first few chapters of this second novel would have simply been a smooth transition and I would not have struggled to understand the futuristic societies and cultural changes on which the second book is based. However, although reading “Broken Angel” would have provided me with the framework to jump right into the story of “Flight of Shadows,” it was not necessary to have read the first novel to understand and enjoy the continued saga of Caitlyn Brown.
This second book finds Caitlyn Brown in a futuristic America filled with turmoil and strict governmental control. Caitlyn has a genetic abnormality which makes her invaluable to several influential people who will do anything to capture Caitlyn so that they can unlock the secrets found within her genetic code. In this dark portrayal of humanity, Caitlyn can trust no one in her quest for freedom and her desires for a “normal” life. As she struggles to stay ahead of her assailants, Caitlyn learns the significance of her DNA as she comes to terms with her differences and discovers her individual purpose in life.
My only complaints about this book are 1) the struggle that I had in beginning to understand the terminology and background information and 2) the constant change of viewpoints. Every chapter changes viewpoint, and while this could be used to build excitement and tension within the plot, I found it to be annoying at several points in time since a chapter could be as few as two pages long. Overall the story line was excellent, and after I understood the background information, I found myself excited to see the next turn in the story and how Caitlyn would choose to react.
I enjoyed the fact that Sigmund Brouwer uses this novel to bring up several controversial topics such as war, governmental control, immigration, and faith. Although this book is not written from a strong Christian perspective, there are several sprinklings of Christian ideas throughout. All in all, Brouwer effectively brings up many ideas and leaves them on the table for you to process further in your own. I would recommend this book as a good read for anyone who enjoys the futuristic “sci-fi” genre entangled with current issues and topics for debate. Excellent read!

If you are in to futuristic thrillers this book is one you want to chose for your collection of reads. It is fast paced and a quick read. Flight of Shadows is the sequel to Broken Angel. I think it would be helpful to read Broken Angel first. Although Flight of Shadows can stand alone, if beginning with Broken Angel you would get a better grasp of the characters and story line. This is a dark read that many will enjoy. It takes us into the dark world of the future where everything has changed and genetic codes have been broken. Caitlyn Brown is on the run. She has been hiding, but now those who have been seeking her know just where she is. Caitlyn carries secrets within her body and with those secrets comes power. As she on the run there are few she can trust. With her unique DNA, everyone wants a piece of Caitlyn, whether for research or their own personal gain, she is running out of places to go. Caitlyn finds herself having to make a choice between those she loves and her own freedom. Something she has never really had at all.
Whether you like futuristic thrillers or not, Sigmund Brouwer is an amazing writer. The writing of this book was outstanding. Within each page you were taken inside the dark life of Caitlyn Brown. You feel her emotion and you find yourself turning the page to see what is next. It made me see that that we all have secrets. We hold things within us that others would judge us for. Some would do anything to seek those out for their own good. Finding freedom is letting go of the shadows that haunt us and embracing who we truly are.

As I read "Flight of the Shadows," I had to ask, “What’s the purpose of a book?” Do I read to be entertained, to learn, to provoke thought? "Flight of the Shadows" plunges the reader into darkness and evil from the very first page and leaves that reader there, absorbing horror and hopelessness.
That’s not where I want to be when I read.
And so, I almost gave up on this book, something I very rarely do. Before I did however, I turned to the back of the book, another thing I rarely do. My son thoroughly enjoyed Sigmund Brouwer’s books for kids a few years back; I wanted to give this book for grown-ups a fair review—but I didn’t want to let it leave me among the sad and cynical.
Instead of finding the end of the story, though, I found a letter from the author telling why he wrote such a book. He explains how he drew from history to show a possible future based on current scientific and political events. In the book he is speculating on where society’s current direction can lead us all if people don’t examine their choices more carefully. He’s reminding us to learn from history, so history won’t repeat itself.
That intrigued me. I decided to finish the book.
If you enjoy books that examine society and make you think, if you like science and political fiction, you may want to read this book. Remember, however, that you’ll have to wade through a lot of darkness and evil, horror and disturbing images in order to discover what the author is trying to say. It may not be a journey that you really want to take. Proceed with caution. Reader beware

Before reading Flight of Shadows I was unfamiliar with fellow Albertan and Christian author Sigmund Brouwer’s work. Although Flight of Shadows is the sequel to Broken Angel, I couldn’t resist the chance to review it, and I’m not disappointed at all. With few Christian authors delving into the edgier realms of dystopian futurism and genetic engineering, I couldn’t wait to read Brouwer’s take.
Our heroine Caitlyn has escaped from a life of sheltered stigmatism, marked by the hump on her back, her childhood in a tightly controlled religious community has ended (read Broken Angel for more detail than I can provide.) She now finds herself struggling for survival in a world bent upon capturing her. Whether for government experiments, or personal vendetta’s, Caitlyn finds herself on the run as she navigates a world still largely unfamiliar to her.
Brouwer has created a realistic near-future world with entirely plausible outcomes of many events and situations that we find in today’s society. His writing is filled with action and suspense and manages to fill in first time readers on the back-story without lumping it all together in a single chunk of expository back story. Rather these facts are subtly, and skillfully woven throughout the novel itself, making for a smooth reading experience.
The only area that suffers somewhat from jumping in mid-story is that there is some character development missing. The new characters are very well drawn, as well as a surprisingly likeable government agent in pursuit of Caitlyn, but the existing characters aren’t entirely fleshed out – a risk that potential readers should be aware of taking with most sequels.
Flight of Shadows is darker than a lot of Christian fiction, there are some dark themes including violence, and the internal motivations and desires of some of the antagonists, many are deviant, and as such, this is a title best reserved for adult readers. Few of the characters are ostensibly believers, with only a couple expressing a personal faith. Others clearly have knowledge of God but do not seem (based upon this book taken as a read alone) to be engaged in a personal relationship with Him.
Now, that being said, I thought that Flight of Shadows was a great read. I could barely put it down! The premise is interesting, and the story incredibly engaging. I’m not sure if another title is planned for the series, but I’ll certainly be keeping my eyes peeled for another installment!

Flight of Shadows is the sequel to Broken Angel (although it nowhere says it on the cover). The prequel dealt with an enclosed religious theocracy ruled by extremists. This sequel deals with life on the outside as people manage to escape .
The time is the future when genetic experimentation has progressed to the point of combining the DNA of two species. While much of the research was destroyed, one young woman has survived.
Caitlyn has wings and can fly. Her blood has extraordinary healing powers. She is being tracked by a ruthless bounty hunter. She is being pursued by government officials. She is being hunted by a twisted scientist who wants her DNA.
Add to this a couple of escapee misfits who want to help Caitlyn survive. Throw in a young man who is fast, sharp and dangerous. He has survived so far and is willing to help Caitlyn.
Brouwer has created a potential world of the future where genetic engineering has gone far beyond what is safe. The Water War has changed the political landscape of America. Cities are walled and checkpoints guard those inside. Descendents of illegals do menial work while others live in luxury.
This novel contains much violence. The bounty hunter is ruthless and loves to inflict pain. There are other evil people Caitlyn and her friends must survive.
There are plenty of twists in the plot so that my interest was held until the surprising end.
Don't look for much Christianity in this book. There are some general references to it but none of the characters is a Christian (as far as I could tell).
While this is a sequel to Broken Angel there is enough information given through the story that one who has not read the previous book will not be totally lost.

I began reading Flight of Shadows and was looking forward to a science fiction thriller that was action packed and constantly moving.
Initially, it was challenging to get into the book, I felt lost and couldn't clearly and easily connect the characters to what was happening. Once, I kept reading that changed and I was quickly drawn into Caitlyn's, the protagonist, plight and her adventure. In the future, Caitlyn is the result of a genetic mutation that has giving her wings enabling her to fly. Her DNA has caused her to be a fugitive fighting for her life in a future world that has literally become survival of the fittest. In Caitlyn's world, evil is present, real, and terrifying.
Flight of Shadows was definitely filled with ideas that appear plausible in the near future with all the genetic and scientific testing that is going on around in our world today. It was exciting and fast paced, just as I suspected. The story line is one that is probably best reserved for a more mature audience, as there are situations that would not be appropriate for a younger reader.
Overall, it was an entertaining and thought provoking book - although disturbing in a number of ways.
