Maire, Gleannmara's warrior queen, finds her fierce heart is gentled when she takes a reformed mercenary -- a Christian, no less -- as hostage during a raid. At first she wonders what kind of God would make a fine warrior like Rowan of Emerys such a coward. The book wasn't I expected! There were some things I didn't quite agree with such as the conversation about Adam and Eve! I did like however Maire! She was so passionate and honest!

When I saw this on Goodreads and CBD the cover caught my attention and the description captured it. I didn’t even look for it at the public library (although I’ve since learned that it’s there) and instead bought it. I rarely buy a book, but this was only 99 cents. :-) And it’s certainly worth all 99 pennies.
The story takes place in fifth-century Ireland and I really enjoyed learning more about early Irish Christianity. The author did a lot of research and includes a bibliography at the end of the book for those interested in learning more.
Maire is a warrior queen whose parent’s realm is being managed by the greedy Morlach until she comes of age. Raised alongside two foster brothers she has been trained to be queen, to be a strong warrior. Thus she is uncertain how to let others – certainly a man as attractive, strong and kind as Rowan, help her. I loved how Maire slowly learns how to be a good queen and a woman.
But Maire isn’t the only one learning lessons. Rowan struggles with memories and scars from his youth that he must confront and overcome. Forgiveness, trusting God and discerning His will are no easy matters when you’ve been uprooted from your home.
There is a fair amount of kissing and passion, the reader knows what’s going to happen but isn’t told. But there is a lot of restraint as well. Rowan fights hard to honor the 7th commandment (don’t commit adultery) which is so neat.
A great mix of adventure, action, love (several types), and friendship.

Being Irish myself and someone who enjoys the era portrayed in this book, I enjoyed it but did wish that it was not quite so predictable or that it pulled the other characters into the story a bit more to add a twist or two. All in all it was a good read. I would recommend it to people who enjoy period fiction.

This was a great book all the way through until I got to the last couple of chapters where the author thought it would be acceptable to use a curse word, needless to say I never finished the book. I just don't understand how someone could talk about God all through the book and then feel it is alright to use profanity I found it to be offensive and I could not recommend this book to any of my christian friends. I wish someone had wrote a review regarding this, because then I would not have wasted my money on this purchase. Hopefully this will help others!

Maire is a fast-paced story line in which Linda Windsor does an incredible job of weaving spiritual lessons into a historical setting. Her ability to develop characters, dialog, and plot set her head and shoulders above many who flood the fiction market today. I felt transported back in time to the hills of Ireland; it was literally one of those books that could not be put down! I look forward to the other 2 novels in this series... when life allows me to do nothing but read :)

Maire was a book I was looking forward to, and it was a pleasant surprise. At first, I thought I was going to end up not finishing this one because the new terms, Irish history, and some of the other elements weren't fully explained and were therefore confusing. However, I'm glad I didn't give up. Maire is a strong, unique character, especially for fifth-century Ireland, and the intrigue and love surrounding her marriage are wonderful. I especially appreciated, not the physical battles, but the spiritual ones, in the book, and how Maire showed authentic growth and faith as a rookie Christian. I'm looking forward to Riona, the next book, very much.

This is a really entertaining action packed book. It is a series of three books and actually the third book is the best. Maire was the first book of Linda Windsors I had ever read and I diffently will read additional books of hers. She is a great storyteller and if you like historic romance novels, this is a must read.
