Alpha Omega Publications Horizons Math, Grade K, Complete Set

No more hours of boring, endless repetition - your kids will actually thank you for this interactive math curriculum! Each level has two student workbooks, but the teacher handbook is the main component of the program. All instruction is provided through one-on-one teacher instruction, which is the biggest difference between Horizons and the self-guided Lifepacs.

Another big focus in Horizons is hands-on learning using a variety of manipulatives, which can mostly be found around the house: pencils, pipe cleaners, play or real money, thread, a timer, clock, yardstick, etc.

Novice home-educators should not be intimidated by the amount of teacher involvement as it is carefully layed out in the beginning of each year's teacher handbook. The teacher handbook also provides a variety of teaching suggestions and supplemental activities for additional practice.

The concepts covered in Horizons K include:

  • Counting 1-100
  • Number Recognition
  • Number Writing
  • Number Value
  • Number Before, After, and Between
  • Place Value
  • Addition and Subtraction
  • Money
  • Time
  • Calendar
  • Number Theory
  • Colors
  • Shapes
  • Size
  • Comparisons
  • Direction and Position
  • Coordination

This is my first year home schooling my 5 year-old, so I would very much like a lot of explicit instructions in the teacher's manual. This is just not the case with Horizon's program. It will say, "Teach the octogon." Okay, what exactly am I teaching? Number of sides? Length of sides? Interior angles? What? I don't know what's important and I don't want to have to sit and think about it. I can only imagine how tough it will be in higher grades where the matial is more advanced. Look elsewhere if you're new at this like I am!

I bought this curriculum thinking that activities would dominate our homeschool lessons which is completely contrary to what it actually is. As a former teacher, I have had to employ a LOT of ideas from other sources as the teacher guide simply says, "Teach tally marks" rather than giving ANY ideas for activities or hands on tasks. After a week and a half (and looking ahead in planning for next week) I am BORED with this curriculum and have just purchased a different curriculum which gives more ideas and is much more hands on.
I am very disappointed to have wasted my money on a product that did not live up to its description.

I will be using this program next school year, but it looks amazing. I used Horizons Preschool curriculum with my twins, and they have learned so much. They are more advanced than their peers attending kindergarten. I chose the Horizons Kindergarten curriculum because of the great success we've had with the preschool curriculum, and I cannot wait to get started with it! I gave the curriculum 4 stars because I haven't actually used the product, but I'm sure it will meet my expectations.

My daughter has always liked math, but shes never been excited to do it until we started this curriculum. Its fun engaging and Challenging. This is a fast paced curriculum so not for the slow learners. I love it because she practically teaches herself with a small bit of help from me here and there. If your child learns fast and loves a challenge this is for them.

I really like how simple it was for me teach Horizons Math and how complete it was. But this for more advance student ready to go at the spend they set. I spent 6 months trying to get son keep up with what felt a breakneck speed for a K. Other programs first grade cover many thing covered in the first book. we never started book 2.

This math curriculum has been a good start for my child.
I feel that she has received a good understanding of the basics.
We have skipped over some of the pages on money. I felt it was moving a little too fast and there was also some areas of counting money that were lacking in good instruction.
You may want to save yourself a little money and skip buying the teacher's guide. I've barely opened it.

I have just started using this math program for my son who has AS- high functioning autism. After trying 2 other math programs and ending up with many tears. We needed something different. This program is colorful and he is able to focus better because of it! We both love it!

Good. Covers much more than I had expected for K. The teacher book seems incomplete because it refers to things that are not included. We do not always use the teacher guide because the student book is so self explanitory, but sometimes it is confusing and the teacher book is necessary. Probably not the best choice for a hyper child, but over all I like it.

This product saved our homeschool this year! Math was a struggle last year because we did NOT like the curriculum we were using. Horizons is easy not only for the student to learn and retain new knowlede but is also easy for the teacher to use! It has been a JOY using it this year and my son has been doing very well. Great advice for all homeschool moms--give yourself permission to scratch something that's not working and try something else! I'm looking forward to using Horizons math again next year!

My daughter is doing very well in this program. The only advice I would have is to save yourself a few dollars and don't buy the teacher's book. We haven't used it at all. The student book gives the directions and is very easy to follow.

This is just what I needed as a beginning homeschooling mom. The lessons are well mapped out and the Teacher's Edition gives you ideas for additional math learning activities every day!

My husband and I looked at several homeschooling math curriculums before deciding on Horizons. Horizons Math teaches the fundamental concepts of math in a child/parent friendly format. Concepts are introduced and repeated throughout the series. Horizons has been a HUGE hit in our homeschool!

Excellent Curriculum! Very vivid colors. Lesson plans are easy to follow and teach. More advanced than regular Lifepacs but not too fast paced for a 5 year old.
