I love this math program for my son. I love that it reviews a lot, but continues to move onto new concepts to keep him interested. The workbook keeps his attention - not too challenging to discourage, but not too easy to bore. However, to get the most out of this program, you MUST MUST MUST have the teacher's guide. If you simply walk your child through the workbook, he/she will not get all that they could out of this program, in my opinion. The teacher's guide reminds you at the front of every lesson to do things with the hundreds chart and flash cards. I did have to print my own hundreds chart and make my own flash cards, but that was no biggie for me. The teacher's guide also gives different ideas of how to explain things that your child may not quite understand. I find it to be a very helpful and necessary tool. We will continue to use Horizons for 2nd grade!

This is our second year to use Horizons Math and we are very pleased wtih it. It seems a little advanced for first grade but certainly within the grasp of a normal 6- 7 year old child. My little boy frequently asks to do more pages than I had planned on doing,

I started this curriculum when I pulled my daughter out of third grade (the school was failing ALL the kids in math). She thought she was "stupid" at it. This curriculum helped her gain confidence as it introduces new concepts and gives practice (but not too much) on old concepts. Other curriculums beat the old drum too much and cause students to get bored.
I also like Horizons for their color and faith content.
My son used horizons and went right from 6th gr. math to Alg. 1 I heard later that Horizons was an accelerated math.

I really like this program. It is colorful and covers everything necessary for 1st grade. It does not take a lot of teacher planning or preparation. I didn't give it 5 stars only because it is a basic program with no additional materials included. But not all of us want that anyway!

Excellent curriculum! We tried another math program for our daughter and she always dreaded it. A friend told us about Horizons and now she enjoys math and is learning more. We liked it so much that we use it for all 3 of our school-aged children. I recommend the teacher's manual for easy grading.

Great math program which goes beyond the level currently in our county's public schools. Definitely use the teacher's manual. I wasn't using it at first since other reviewers said that it wasn't needed. Then I realized that I wasn't doing some of the exercises that I should have been doing which are really important (for instance practice of memorizing math facts). I don't do every activity suggested in the teacher's manual, but I pick out three or four things to go over with my son before he does the workbook and have found it very important.

I used the Horizons Kindergarten Math with my 4 year old son. He loved it and mastered the concepts easily. He loves the 1st grade too. The lessons are brightly colored and engage the child easily. No need to buy the teacher's edition. Lessons are easily understood through the student workbook.

I really like how this program weaves many skills into one lesson. It teaches a new skill and reviews others at the same time. My son loves it and the colorful pictures with easy to read directions are clear for him to understand.

My daughter has just begun the 1st grade workbooks and is doing very well. She tells me everyday, "I love math!". As someone who didn't enjoy the subject growing up I am very happy that this challenges her yet allows her to enjoy the process. The color pages are great and helps to hold her attention. I do like the "multi-tasking" concept and works well with my children. I won't change to anything else. I highly recommend.

I love Horizons Math. It makes learning fun for kids. It has a limitted amount of seat work and provides the extra time for one on one.

Horizons Math is my favorite curriculum for children ages First Grade through Third Grade. I like how it presents the new concepts in such a way that it is easy for the child to understand. Reviewing previous concepts each lesson help keep everything fresh. This program accelerates their progress like no other Math Program I have worked with. I highly recommend it. Keep in mind, however, that it is an accelerated program. Be prepared to purchase the book that is 1/2 grade below where your child would be in public schools.
