This is our first year using Horizons Math and both my daughter and I love it. It seems advanced for third grade, which is not a bad thing. I love how each lesson has a little bit of everything learned in previous lessons. The review is great for my daughter and she loves how colorful the pages are. She isn't bored or overwhelmed by the work because there isn't a million questions that all look the same. It is the first math curriculum she has had that works so well for her. I know this will be a successful year in math for her.

With their spiral curriculum, Horizons Mathematics sets a very strong foundation for students! My kids seldom need review of a particular concept but when they do worksheets are available. Such a curriculum should be used in all math programs!!

Jumps around & no foundational basic skills

To be fair we used Horizons with my first child and it worked great. I don't know if has been changed in the last 3 years but I ordered it again for my 2nd (concrete sequential) child and it didn't work for her. I will explain why: #1. The work book jumps from subject to subject without a progressive sequential build up of the important basic skills such as adding/multiplying single digit numbers. The first multiplication skills required are far beyond a child that has never been taught or practiced. I had to rework the entire program & write up manipulative skill worksheets to teach her those. I am disappointed that these workbooks missed those foundation skills.

I love the Horizons Math Workbooks! They are very colorful and teach concepts way earlier than they do in public school. For example, starting in second grade, they have kids solving simple algebra equations. We will continue to use these as long as we homeschool. : )

IT WORKS! What else can I say. My 3rd grade dtr (that hates math) is a MATH WHIZ! It is so funny to hear her chat with friends and listen to her say how much she hates math and yet she can easily pop off multiplication facts and she is so proud of her grasp of Roman Numerals. Not to mention her grasp of pre-algebra concepts! I am devastated that we lose Horizons Math after 5th grade. I am already on the prowl for something that can hold her interest like these books do. LOVE LOVE LOVE Horizons Math!

We are using this book for our daughter who is now homeschooled after a struggle in the public school setting. We appreciate this curriculum for the nice balance of pictures/color with work/numbers. It would be a nice choice for a student who is distracted by too many manipulatives or activity on a page, but would be overwhelmed or bored with a black and white page of problems. The lessons are short enough to keep the child's attention but long enough to practice multiple skills. It has great spriraling review and variety of skills and exercises daily. I have not used the teacher's manual except for the answers, and suggest only purschasing Part 2 of the Teacher's Manual, which has the answers. Part 1 has the lessons plans.

Although I have swithched out other curriculum over the years I have stuck with Horizons math for all of my children. It is well written with bright colors to keep the interest of younger children and simple instructions to be followed. -Jennifer

Quite thorough curriculum. My student is home-schooled. She is using this book independently and her mathematics skills are better than all of the public school students we know. She finds it easy and enjoyable.

The horizons math grade 3 is exactly what I was looking for. wanted a summer stimulator, not necessarily full curriculum. but very impressed, may consider switching my curriculum if this better keeps my son engaged by summers end. He definalty likes the set up of Horizons better that the current curriculum I used this year. He was unchallanged and finished by April.Loves Math

We've only been in school 1 week, but so far we really like this new curriculum. My daughter likes how colorful it is and I like that she can work more independently. She seems to like math a little better so far. I'm hopeful this will help her enjoy math alot more.

In my case, Horizons Math has worked better than the other systems I have tried in K - 4th grades. Because it breaks lessons into short segments, without focusing for too long on one lesson, the daily assignment has been much easier for my A.D.D. son to deal with effectively. The frequent reviews throughout the workbooks work well for us in the same way. They remind the child of what they have learned, then move them on, which keeps their attention and gives them a sense of accomplishment, quickly. Our normal daily assignment is only 4 pages, getting us through the curriculum in a school year. I have used other systems with my two older children, and have found this working better with my two younger ones. I do recommend Horizons Math.
