Stressing modeling and building a firm foundation of basic skills, students practice each format and develop confidence along with creativity.

Six DVDs are included with teacher training, as well as three 2-hour demonstrations of the first step being taught to students at three different grade levels. Simply watch the DVD and present that lesson to the student. The included Binder Workbook contains sample lesson plans, ideas, graphic organizers, support, examples and more information to make teaching as easy as possible.

Included student workshops on DVD also allow for grade-specific information to be taught alongside the nine units: 2nd-4th Graders learn about key word outlines, adverbs and strong verbs; 5th-7th graders learn how to write an outline from a report and dress up their writing with adverbs, noun clauses, strong verbs and more; 8th graders and more advanced students covers key word outlines, note taking, paragraph writing and study skills. I am only on the 2nd DVD at this point, but am very impressed. Finally, after 18 years of homeschooling, I feel as though I have step-by-step guidelines on teaching writing. My four boys actually seem to enjoy the process because they know what they are supposed to accomplish. At least I am not hearing the usual groans from them! I wish I had known about this program with my first six children. Mr. Pudewa is enthusiastic about his subject and speaks in an entertaining way. He makes good writing seem attainable. He makes teaching writing seem possible. I know I haven't gotten too far into the program, but I am very optimistic that I will be able to teach this to my children and that they will learn how to write.

There just isn't a better writing program. This is not a curriculum but a style or technique of teaching students to write well. It is good for all levels ages 6-adult. I use the technique within all my subjects and it has enabled me to drop having a separate writing program. Writing becomes part of the learning process. Basically, students using this technique gain confidence in their own writing skills. Also, it provides the tools for study, comprehension, and analyzing differing works of literature. Beginning at the basic level of outlining and re-writing a literary piece, the Institute for Excellence in Writing branches out to encompass the timed SAT essay and then into literary analysis. I put off purchasing this due to cost for years, I wish I had not. Now that I have I am putting it to good use.
