These two ladies have done it again. This is an eye-opening book filled with interesting facts and statistics about children and todays society. They clearly expose areas that christian parents have been too permissive in and thereby have allowed satan a foothold in the family.
Melisasa and Sissy are counselors of youth through the Daystar Counseling Ministry. Their combined experience in working with children and youth make them extremely qualified to write this book.
If you are a parent seeking a book that will give you biblical solutions to daily situations of parenthood this is it. This book will encourage, empower and equip parents.
It is an easy, comfortable, and enjoyable read..much like a visit with girlfriends.

Modern Parents, Vintage Values by Melissa Trevathan & Sissy Goff is a powerful resource for parents in a world when values seem to have gone by the wayside. Both authors are counselors at Daystar Counseling Ministries, so they bring a wealth of anecdotes about bad behavior and ideas to raise children in a Christian way in a secular world. The chapters focus on various virtues: patience, kindness, compassion, etc, that our children can be taught. Of course the most important lesson they impart is that our children learn through our example. When we act in a hypocritical manner, we can't expect them to get the message. Each chapter ends with a "Sunday drive" which are realistic exercises to use at home with your children to encourage growth in that specific area. The authors also break up the chapters into sections about younger children and then teenagers, because what works with one group won't necessarily work with the other. I appreciated how the authors never made me feel like a failure as a parent. The book is always encouraging, and while the authors have high aspirations for their readers, they are also recognize that parents are human and therefore fallible. It's a book I would recommend to anyone with children, regardless of age, as I found advice for my seven-year-old as well as my two teenagers.

Authors, Melissa Trevathan and Sissy Goff offer practical, sound advice in their latest book, Modern Parents Vintage Values. The book is broken into three sections: Modern Parents, Vintage Values and Timeless Truths. Each section tackles tough issues that parents face today (such as internet safety, texting/sexting, lack of respect, sexuality, drugs, alcohol, cutting, self harm, etc) and offers tips, solutions and ideas on how to recognize warning signs and address these issues with your child. With over 60 years of combined experience as counselors and working with children, the authors definitely know their subject matter. I like how they took practical applications and interwove that advice with scriptural foundations and principles. I also like how the authors list vintage values (since so many of these appear to have fallen by the wayside) and they show parents how to teach and instill these into their children. Values such as kindness, respect, compassion, forgiveness, gratitude, integrity, and responsibility all very important characteristics that parents should try to pass down to their children. A chapter is dedicated to each value and the author also defines the value and breaks it down, so parents can see what it should look like and how to demonstrate it. You cannot go wrong in purchasing this book in fact, if you are attempting to raise a child (or children) in modern society, this book is a great resource to help parents educate themselves and better prepare their children to be honorable men and women.
