Houghton Mifflin Harcourt The Silmarillion, Second Editon

The work that illustrates the cores of Tolkien's fantasy world, it is the last and posthumously published The Silmarillion that he considered his most important work. A remarkable tale of legend and myth, this is Tolkien's retelling of the creation of the world and the happenings of the First Age, the drama to which the Lordof the Rings characters look back. 365 pages, hardcover with dust jacket.

The Silmarillion is a captivating tale of the world of Middle-earth before and after the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. It is very detailed and has wonderful pronunciation guides and timelines to name a few parts of it. Wonderful book! A delightful addition to any LOTR library.

It has many more christian themes in this book than Lord of The Rings. I didn't like how the story would leap to other characters, but you have things in the back of the book to help you understand the vast world from the mind of J.R.R.Tolkein. It is very interesting tale of a parallel earth. And the christian themes are not quite as obvious as Chronicles of Narnia {another fine tale}, but I don't see that as bad or good, just distinctive. I believe this is the Tolkein at his best.Jehovah bless!

This is a really good book, but if you haven't read or didn't like The Lord of the Rings, you probably won't want to read The Silmarillion. It reads kind of like a history book (though a very engaging history book) of Middle Earth. It's long and hard to get into, but once you do get into it, it sweeps you off your feet.
