American Christmas Carol, a classic movie a must have in every home, at every library, Great family movie, Many great lessons to learn about how we must be grateful for everything we have, we are not to take things for granted nor people. We live in a very materialistic society we must continue to teach our family and grandchildren about the value of family,, work, sacrifice, faith, and blessings from God that we have so much when others have so little, or basically nothing and yet everything you must pass on to others such as donation of clothing or food it means so much for those that have nothing. Please do not forget our Homeless veterans. Thank you.

A very brilliant retelling of Dickens classic tale! One of the difficulties of approaching such a timless story is how do you make it feel fresh but still retain it's familiarity.
In this case the story is reimagined durring the Great Depression. Henry Winkler, best known as The Fonz on Happy Days is convincing as Benedict Slade, the Scrooge figure in this story. Not once do you wait for him to say "Aye!" and give some one a thumbs up.
Slade is a repo man in the Great Depression taking the things of greatest value from his lenders becasue they can't pay bills. Slade's put upon worker, Thatcher an anagram of Cratchet) has seen enough. He urges Slade to reopen the mines, and therfore help put people back to work so they could actually pay. Slade will hear none of it and fires Thatcher.
That is when he is guided by the Spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future. The Spirits all have their unique twist to them. The most humerous is the Spirit of Christmas Future decked out in Disco chains, since the story is set in the 1920s, Disco would be the future.
All of the themes of redemption, generosity, hope, and the true spirit of Christmas are present in this film.
A Christams Carol is justifiably called a timelss tale, and this reimagining just proves it.

I try to find this movie every year since it first aired. Not long ago I got rid of my cable company, so in effect, I have no TV. Upon discovering this DVD, I had to snatch it up! But I was a little disappointed that it was NOT caption-ready. Positive side of that was the camera work was good enough to lip-read where needed by me.

This adaptation of the classic "A Christmas Carol" transforms the story to a more modern (the Great Depression) time and a more close-to-home location (in the U.S.). The core of the story remains, even though almost all else (the characters, the setting, the script, and the means of redemption) have changed. We have enjoyed this refreshed version of the classic story as much as the more traditional versions of the story.
