B&H Books The Meaning of History

Is history constantly repeating itself, or is civilization evolving toward a final resolution? It depends on whom you ask. The Meaning of History is a concise yet absorbing look at the meaning of history as interpreted by major historians and philosophers including Immanuel Kant, Georg Hegel, and the often-misunderstood Karl Marx. By examing their diverse and sometimes provocative approaches, this book draws challenging conclusions aboutwhere humanity has been and where it is heading. This book explores not just the facts of history but also the personalities and purposes of the people and events that shapted it. Starting in the New Testament and continuing through until today, this book will forever change the way you look at history and your place in it.

The questions addressed in the book have been asked by many of the great thinkers in human history. They include: is there meaning to history? Is there a pattern to history? Is God in control of history? What is my place in history? This book is a clear and fascinating discussion of the major answers proposed by thinkers throughout history, including Toynbee, Sorokin, Kant, Marx and Augustine. The author evaluates each theory and offers the reader guidance to discover a Christian answer.
