IVP Academic New Testament Introduction, Fourth Edition

Long accepted as the benchmark among introductory works on the New Testament, Donald Guthrie's New Testament Introduction is now in its Fourth Edition.

Many books in this genre provide every kind of 'help' imaginable-from CD-ROMs to online quizzes. Guthrie's book is different. It is focused exclusively on academic content serving the believer. Each New Testament book is presented in thorough detail. Guthrie takes account of critical theories by Christians and non-Christians and examines them. He engages and sorts critically and responsible sifts through issues of authorship, date, provenance, literary structures and conventions, technical linguistic/lexical concerns, purpose, and the theological message of each book.

Guthrie's work makes an excellent up-to-date reference tool, and an outstanding resource for serious college or graduate students pursuing theological education.

It is like taking a top seminary course. Guthrie covers all the academic issues with succint discussion and conservative perspective. I recommend this book for pastoral training courses on the New Testament.

Guthrie offers the classic evangelical (= conservative) understanding of the New Testament, including refuting the more popular liberal (= false) claims.

I have the first edition from 1970 and just ordered the new edition (1990) because this book is so good and I wanted to have the latest edition. I'm sure it will be worth another $33 to get, as I consider this to be the best from a conservative viewpoint. The book is very learned and gives detailed discussions of questions such as authorship, yet it is very easy to read for the non scholar.
