In this century an enormous amount of literature has been devoted to the Fourth Gospel. Raymond E. Brown's commentary has been influenced by a lot of works from various schools of thought and traditions. This commentary is the first book of a three-volume translation of and commentary on John and Johannine Epistles. It contains an introduction to the whole Gospel and a treatment of chapters 1-12, or the Johannine account of the public ministry of Jesus.
Raymond E. Brown, S.S., Ph.D. was internationall regarded as a dean of New Testament scholars. He was Auburn Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. Among his more than thirty-five books on the Bible are three volume in the Anchor Bible series.

Raymond Brown was perhaps the greatest 20th century theologian. He applied his insightful intellect to an objective analysis of the then current historic knowledge about Jesus and the author of Luke. He remains one of the rare commentators who makes the reader feel confident that every word, every thought, was carefully and exhaustively researched and chosen to convey the best possible scholarly insight into the Bible. He writes from the perspective of a Christian believer who finds strength for his faith in a rigorous understanding of Biblical text, ancient culture, and the historicity of events on which the Gospels are based. A must read, as are all Raymond Brown texts, for both students of the Bible and skeptics.

Pretty good commentary and easy to read. Mr. Brown comes at John's writings from all angles and leaves the reader excited about the message that continues to draw many believers in to the arms of a living God. I recommend this commentary to men and woman that want to dig deeper in the Word and grow in faith. I thank God for the theologians!!!
