Back Home Industries Spell to Write and Read

Based on the principles of internalizing (spelling), recognizing (reading), composing (writing) and comprehending (understanding) words, Spell to Write and Read utilizes phonics to teach spelling. Seventy phonograms and twenty-eight spelling rules are the basis for everything else learned, and is presented in a positive manner instead of filled with exceptions to the rules. Each lesson is filled with historical and spelling notes on each concept, and is filled with examples, demonstrations and activities for each new rule or phonic. Filled to the brim with information to spell and compose. Spelling lists are included. This overall teacher's manual replaces Teaching Reading at Home & School as the companion to the spelling list in Wise Guide for Spelling. 238 pages, softcover.

I really like the concept and logic of the material. The student materials are methodical and organized. However, using it to teach beginners or using it for the first time, I find the guide very disjointed and not well organized.

My natural speller (auditory learner)loved this program and proceeded at a good clip with no fuss. My struggling speller (7)labored over the assignments. We started on list A and struggled starting with the 2nd list. It was such a burden for him, and so tedious for me that we just quit. I know many people who love this program, as did my oldest, it just wasn't a good fit for my visual-spacial learner. Maybe I just didn't give it enough time or started before he was ready. On a more positive note, both boys loved memorizing the phonogram cards and beg to do those regularly(They jump, clap, do a jumping jack or whatever comes to mind during the review). We will definitely continue using the phonogram cards since I refer to them on an almost daily basis.

This product makes teaching language arts and reading through phonics fun! I love using it and my children have blossomed while using it. SWR focuses on teaching the phonograms first then moving on to spelling. Since they know the phonograms and their rules, spelling isn't so hard! This book should be bought with the companion WISE Guide book that she wrote as well. In the WISE Guide, Wanda includes many optional activities that give your student grammar training as well. The spelling words are in the WISE Guide so getting this book by itself is only getting half the story. Combined, the two books are phenomenal! You can take as long as you like in each section which encourages you to move at your child's pace. I don't mean to gush, but I've been using this product for almost a year now and I love it. I'm secure in knowing that they are getting all the training (spelling, writing, grammar, reading, decoding, etc.) they need to succeed.
