Educators Publishing Service Explode the Code, Book 3

Explode the Code, for use in the primary and elementary grades, teaches the basic phonics concepts necessary for beginning through intermediate reading. Each of the 12 illustrated workbooks in the program contains a series of lessons of approximately 8 pages in length. It's good for extra worksheets but far too repeatitive. Same words over and over for each lesson. Would like to see different words to enhance understanding of concept instead of them being able to memorize the words since only a few pinpointed for lesson.

Such fun and good learning happening in this easy to use and engaging workbook. My dd feels capable as she can work on pages without me present for each question. Having said that, even without my presence she is quite obviously learning new skills and having them reinforced regularly. One of the few school workbooks (no, actually the only school workbook) that she doesn't moan and groan about doing. Priceless.

My students beg to do their Explode the Code! The series is fabulous because the children progress in their reading, and they think they are just having fun. My children use the book independently while I am taking attendance and lunch count. They work at their own pace. I have some doing Level 2, some doing Level 3, and even one doing Level 4 right now. I love this product so much I buy it with my own money for my class.

We have been using the entire Explode the Code series beginning with Get Ready for the code. This book continues to be an excellent source of phonics practice. The pictures sometimes take a moment for the child to figure out which word is needed which I like - many phonics workbooks are just busywork for the most part. Two of my daughters learned to read effortlessly by using these books (and of course being read to!)I highly recommend this series.

My child has completed books 1, 1.5, 2, and 2.5. We are doing these books in combination with Spell to Write and Read. I was getting concerned that she wasn't really learning many sight words, did not seem to be reading as early as her peers, hated reading, etc. Suddenly, in book 2.5, she finally "got it". Her word attack skills are very solid and fantastic. As for sight words, she now is ahead of the game, and we have not spent painful hours drilling the words into her memory. She just mastered them by reading them repeatedly. The best result is now my daughter doesn't hate reading! These two programs working together are fantastic!

This is a solid series. However, for the gifted child or the child who is an advanced reader, it is a bit too repetitive. I found we only needed to use about half of the book. Also, it would be more enjoyable for the child if the activities were a little more varied throughout the book. The same set of activities repeats and repeats with each new skill. My son became bored very quickly. For a struggling or reluctant reader, though, it is a good choice.

This is my 20th year home educating(w/2 out of college ,2 still in college a 17 yr. old and a 9 yr old) and I have used this series for years . My style of home educating does not include the use of many textbooks/workbooks but this is one series I recommend. It helped reinforce both phonetic and spelling skills. It appealed to different learning styles.

I love this book. My 2nd grader who struggles with reading is doing very well with this book and it is helping him recognize the sounds better when reading.

I am using this series for my 7 year old daughter and my 6 year old son. It is working beautifully with both of them, although I find my son gets bored with reading/writing after second page. I've either been doing 2 pages at a time with him (where my daughter could do a whole lesson in one sitting), or work with the book and make it interactive for him. But they have been working!!!

These books are all so great. They give the children such a fun and real way to practice spelling, reading, writing, and vocabulary. We will keep using them with all the children.
