Dr. Lloyd-Jones follows Paul's massive indictment against sin; yet he never loses sight of the function that chapter 2 is meant to serve in the context of the whole letter. Here he unfolds Paul's analysis of the spiritual sickness of the human heart, its deceitfulness and rebellion against God, and its sinister use of religion as a defense mechanism against true conviction of sin. Like Martin Luther, he recognizes that the apostle's plucking up, pulling down and destroying of self-righteousness is intended to clear the way for planting Christ and salvation in our hearts.

This is my first book by D. Martin Lloyd Jones and it is great. He draws so much insight out of the text. I only wish I had purchased the entire set before beginning my series of messages on the book of Romans.

Review 2 for Romans 2:1-3:20: The Righteous Judgment of God

This book is a stellar exposition by "the Doctor" which applies the often misunderstood truths of chapter 2 in particular to today's professing christian. He does a wonderful job in dealing with the relationship between being justified by our works and being judged by our works. He also exposes the terrible impact that sin has on the human condition. Today's church stands in great need of recognizing these truths, and therefore this book deserves a wide readership.
