Banner of Truth Hebrews, 7 Volumes

This seven-volume exposition of Hebrews serves as a premiere example of John Owen's scholarship and pastoral spirit. Owens was one of the greatest systematic theologians among the British Puritans, yet he also excelled in pastoral and spiritual theology. In this commentary, Owens shows a familiarity with a wide range of biblical scholarship and the ability to supply careful analysis and interpretation. Also, following the classical Puritan commentary model, the commentary is very concerned with Christian living. Thus, Owen's exposition is valued for both in-depth scholarship and practical application.

There is very little that I can say that has not already been said about John Owen's exposition of Hebrews. It is a superlative work, well worth purchasing. Potential purchasers should know that these volumes particularly the first two, contain a wealth of biblical information that, while supporting Owen's actual exposition of the epistle to the Hebrews, also offers a systematic understanding of the Scriptures as a whole. The language used here is that of an earlier time and so may be off-putting to someone who simply wants a "fireside" book. If you have read Jonathan Edwards you will have an idea of what to expect from Owen. Highly recommended!!

This is, without a doubt, the greatest commentary ever written on Hebrews. This is no lightweight work; it is deep and rich. If one can master this work one has mastered something great. Owen plumbs the depths of the epistle and Sacred Scripture. If you can only own one commentary on Hebrews then by all means buy this one.

By Far the very best commentary on the book of Hebrews ever written. Owen brings not only a detailed scholarly approach to the book, but also a warm pastoral spirit that is marked with an umistakable spirit of joy. A must for any pastor, scholar, or elder. This book is a true joy for all Christians. It examples the kind of God centered thought that the Church so desperately needs today.
