I cannot recommend David Alan Black's "Learn to Read New Testament Greek" highly enough! This textbook is designed for those without prior linguistic training and is a truly no-nonsense approach to learning Koine, the language of the New Testament. The content is equivalent to a 1st year Greek course and by the end of the book you'll be able to read and understand the entire Gospel of John on your own. I also found it so encouraging to be reading and writing Greek sentences (albeit very simple ones) by just the fourth chapter.

A workbook is also available, but it's not of much use since the publisher seems to only give the answer key to institutions. With the key, it would provide valuable extra practice in applying each lesson.

The entire course is available as DVD lectures taught by Dr. Black himself from his website.

I have been studying with this text on my own and have found it perfect for self-study. A good friend of mine has also used it to teach Greek classes at his church.

If you want to learn NT Greek and have no prior knowledge of the language, or even of how foreign languages work, then this book will suit your perfectly. At the same time, the linguistic lessons are dispersed in short and practical explanations throughout the book, so someone with a linguistic background won't get bored and will be able to learn even faster as they connect his terminology with things they've already learned.

I first took Greek in college in the early 80's. Much was lost and forgotten, but the desire to read once again was great. So, I decided to use Learn to Read New Testament Greek by David Allen Black instead of my original grammar (J. Machen, 1923). I found the explanations and applications were excellent. He gives simple explanations to give context to the grammar being discussed. One basic hint on how to approach the lesson such as "find the finite noun, then the verb and then incorporate the lesson to translate the sentences" turned the process into an easily to follow system. I'm on Chapter 4 and still a ways to go, but confidence is high that self study will be the way to go.

So, if you have never studied Greek before, or you are dusting off a previous experience, I believe you will find this tool to be excellent!
