The Promises She Keeps
Erin Healy
A singer with a terminal illness who wants to keep her memory alive. She wants people to remember her after she passes on. And music is her chance to do that. But the story has more twists and turns since the latest roller coaster ride.
I wanted to like this book and enjoy this story. But I just couldnt get into it. Over and over again, I found myself having put it down and not pick it back up for weeks. Its literally taken me months to do get through this book. And its probably collected more dust that any book I've reviewed. Time and time again I wanted to get into it, but the fantasy side of it and the often changing story that is sometimes hard to follow. I prefer a book that its a little easier and more predictable and this definately didn't fit the bill. Its one of those books that I really probably won't pick it back up ever again.

Review: The Promises She Keeps - Erin Healy- February 2011
Are you wanting a book that has a christian background but in more ways than not comes across something quite different ? The Promises She Keeps is the fourth book written by Erin Healy and the fourth one I have read , so I am familiar with this author's writing and I have loved her edginess that plays within her novels, however this one stood out from the rest and It could be of two reasons , the first I have been busy watching the Season One of Eastwick on my computer and because I have family members with autism and a form of cystic fibrosis, though not as bad as the characters which are portrayed in this novel. The Promises she Keeps delves into the life of five people , we have Promise - a singer who is dying from Cystic Fibrosis and her one dream in life is to make it big before she passes , the second character is a photographer named Zack - which happens to be my brothers name, though spelt differently who takes a photo of a woman in mid air and the photo draws different reactions from those in the novel, all who are captivated and want to seek the woman out , Porta - who is a seventy year old sorcereress which of course is why it reminded me of Eastwick and gives the novel that magical feeling , and the final fourth and fifth characters are twins Cameron and Chelsea. Cameron is autistic and it becomes apparent in the novel that he just has to seek out the person in the photo and it becomes an obsession for him and Chelsea - has always been Cameron's caretaker and looked out for him, but as Cameron treks on his journey, Chelsea becomes worried that his obsession may lead him into danger.
An Edgy Christian Fiction novel that touches base on a number of topics from sorcery to illness both physical and mental and the meaning of obsession and love.

The Promises She Keeps- A fiction written by Erin Healy. Exciting and imaginative, it's a story like no others. Erin's style of writing, full of suspense and a very different approach from the other books that I've read so far.
The book is about 3 main characters: Promise, a girl who has a terminal disease, a talent for singing and a hope for fame, Porta the witch who seeks after immortality and opens an art gallery selling her collections of art pieces in which she believe to be able to give life to the specific buyers and last of all, Chase an autistic artist who draws beautiful and mysterious art pieces that in truth, holds visions for the intended parties.
At the starting of the story, it is slightly confusing as there seems to be no link between the 3 characters but slowly the story unfolds when Promise met at the crossroads in which she has to decide for herself whether she should believe in Chase or Porta; who both promises her "life" in different ways.
The story takes on a very interesting approach as it does not directly tells you of bible phrases and quotes. It sneaks them into the story and become the the lines on the script for the characters that makes it all seem even more real, more intriguing and fascinating. It touches on the scope of visions that bring a new hope, a sense of thrill and wonders as well as a miracle that all has been hoping for, and can only find in One that's Above and Holy- Jesus christ and no others.
I was reluctant to put down the book as the story sets in and the plot was written with an intention to catch the reader's attention completely. One cannot expect the happenings that follow and the ending caught me by surprise though it wasn't really the ending I would like. However, it is a very meaninful lesson learnt all throughout- Our choices are very important and the smallest of it, will indeed affect us greatly. Choose life or choose "to Live without life". Choose wisely. I will definitely recommend this book to my friends.
To comply with new regulations introduced by the Federal Trade Commission, I must post that Thomas Nelson has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book to review. I also must say that the opinions are all mine

Promise is a young girl with cystic fibrosis who dreams of being a singing star. Chase is an autistic man with an amazing artistic ability who has fallen in love with Promise. Porta is an aging art gallery owner who also happens to be a witch in search of immortality. As different as these three characters may be, their fates and their stories are intertwined.
When Promise survives a series of deadly accidents, Porta becomes convinced that the girl holds the secret to eternal life. Chase senses the devious intentions the witch has in store for the girl he loves and attempts to save her from Porta’s machinations.
I really wanted to like this book, and there were parts of it I really enjoyed. Healy did a great job of using the right words to paint a vivid picture of the people and places she was describing. However, the story never seemed to find its way home. There are too many subplots never resolved, too many questions left unanswered for my taste. As a writer, I understand and respect an author having a story to tell and a path she chooses to take her tale. However, as a reader, I was a little frustrated with the story’s climax.
BookSneeze has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book in return for my unbiased review.

"The Promises She Keeps" by Erin Healy is the first book of her's that I have read. This book had very interesting characters. We start with Promise a young girl with Cystic Fibrosis who sings. Then there is Chase a young man with Autism who is an incredible artist. Linking the two characters together is Zach and Portia. A mother/son team who do not like each other and each have their own agenda's in life.
This book started well and kept me longing to find out more about the characters and what will ultimately happen to them all. I felt connected to Promise and sad about her illness. I kept wanting to see one of Chases drawings for myself. My dislike of Portia was just as real as her son's dislike for her.
The books ending feels so rushed that it never felt like the salvation we were lead up to actually happened. There are parts of the story that seemed to never develop fully in the end. Overall it was a good read but left me longing for more completion to the story.

The Promises She Keeps is about a young woman, Promise, who has cystic fibrosis. She yearns to be remembered long after her death, so she pursues a singing career hoping for fame.
Her path crosses with, Chase, an autistic artist, Zack, a troubled young photographer, and Porta, a strange, self-seeking, gallery owner.was an interesting book.
I liked the character development and how the author shows us what autism and cystic fibrosis must be like for those who live it. It was hard to put down. I also liked the allegorical feel of the story line, but I wish it had been made a little plainer that the characters had a relationship with God.
The book was provided for me by the publisher, I was not required to give a good review nor was I compensated.

Having read the books that Erin Healy co-authored with Ted Dekker, I was really looking forward to seeing how she writes on her own. I had not read her first book, so this was my first taste of the author apart from the work of Dekker. I did not go into this book expecting the same type of thriller by any means and as I read it my thoughts were confirmed. The story centers around Promise who has a terminal disease and wants to leave a legacy and be remembered long after her death. Enter Porta and her son Zack who, one way or another find ways to make the dream nearly impossible. Promise ends up befriending an autistic boy who's story is woven into her life in countless ways. The story itself is compelling and the premise is good....but the way the author chose to seemingly hint at redemption and leave it dangling was disappointing. I felt that there was a good build up to what would have been a great allegory for life and then the bottom fell out at the end. The authors research on Cystic Fibrosis and Autism was well done and accurate and the characters in the book drew you into their thoughts quite well. I only wish she had spent more time considering the ending and how it could relate to our everyday struggles.

There are certain authors that you see their name and know without a doubt that you are going to read their book; you don't need to read reviews or even the book cover synopsis. You do this because you've been on journeys with them before, and you simply trust them, for the integrity of their story, characters and writing. In only a few books time ,Erin Healy is in that category in my mind. At the end of her books I experience that "reader's grief" that comes when the book is done and the journey was so amazing that you just weren't ready for it to be over. Once again in "The Promises She keeps" this is how I felt. With her characters such as the lovely Promise- a beautiful young singer with a battle on her hands being a singer with cystic fibrosis and her need to be remembered as someone who was significant, as well as Chase, the young artist seeing life through the filter of autism with a clearer picture of things than most, to the immortality seeking witch Porta, whose focus on only herself wreaks havoc wherever she goes. A series of seemingly "impossible to survive" situations happen to Promise and you wonder what is her story- does she really possess the immortality that Porta is desperately seeking? This story intersects these characters and others on a journey that is most memorable and deeply touching. I grew rather fond of these characters and the journey they took together and I appreciated the redemptive quality of this story. Don't miss this book- I PROMISE you will not be disappointed.

The Promises She Keeps by Erin Healy is a fascinating book and one that I mulled over for several days after I read it. It is a beautifully woven tale of three separate lives converging together throughout an intricate plot. Promise, the talented young singer, wants to be famous and leave her mark on the world before she dies. Porta is an aging witch and art dealer who is looking for immortality. Chase is the autistic man whose focus in life is to draw trees and give them out in love. When Promise survives several crazy accidents, Porta believes she holds the key to immortality. But Chase's visions gives him insight and he becomes Promise's savior in the midst of obsession and insanity.
The prose in this book is lyrical and beautifully soothing. I love how Erin Healy wove in biblical truth and allegory throughout the pages, and I was struck by sheer creativity of the story. It is not my normal style of book, but I loved it! It gripped me from the very first page and kept me turning the page.
This book was provided by the publisher for my honest review.

Promise, a young singer trying to make her mark on the world before succumbing to a terminal genetic disease, actively pursues her singing and modeling career - and isn't sure how she continues to survive the freak accidents that suddenly follow her. Porta, an aging sorceress hears about these accidents and decides that Promise holds the key to immortality for which she's spent a lifetime searching. Chase, an autistic artist, suddenly changes his routine and reaches out to strangers, bringing a new understanding of life and love to everyone who knows him.
I couldn't decide at the beginning of this book who I wanted to cheer for. Most stories have a clear hero and a clear villian, but several times these characters got a bit murky. The reasons for some of their actions are unknown at first, and I started to be a bit disappointed in this character or that one - until I realized that each one was only 'human.' The interrelationships between the cast of characters becomes more and more clear throughout the story, as do the themes of love and what eternal life really means. This book is in no way preachy but shows simply how to live out one's faith - how to internalize what you believe until it just oozes naturally out your pores.
The Christian faith is not based on sunshine and roses, and Healy shows that while we live in a dark and fallen world, and may even dive pretty deeply into the nasty parts of this world, we don't have to stay there. Redemption and love belong to everyone who chooses to accept them - and I love the way that Healy shares this message through Chase and Promise. If you're looking for a story that will stretch your imagination and yet bring home a sound message, this is the book for you.

The Promises She Keeps by Erin Healy...awesome book
The Promises She Keeps by Erin Healy is an awesome book. If you like a book that keeps you hanging on and you DON'T expect what the ending is going to be....this is the book for you. This book has all different kinds of elements in it: autism, cystic fibrosis, art, photography, a search for immortality, death, life, just to name a few.
The characters are awesome and it is very interesting to see how they wind up interacting with each other and come to know each other. You have Chase, who has autism and draws for a purpose and his twin sister, Chelsea who takes care of him. Promise, who has cystic fibrosis, is the main focus of the book and is trying to figure herself and her disease out during the book. Porta, who is in search of immortality, so she can live forever and her son, Zack, who I think is also trying to figure himself out despite what his mother is into.
This book is a book that you won't want to put down. It is very intriguing, easy to read, has short chapters (which I like), and keeps you captivated so that you want to continue to read. I was sad that the story was over when I finished the book. I was so not expecting the ending and kept hoping that as I read it would change into what I wanted to happen, but the way the book ended was exactly the way it should have ended and totally made sense for the book.
You will be captivated by each of these characters and feel like you know them. You can see this quaint little town and you can see where everyone lives and the walks down the sidewalk to get ice cream.....it is this wonderful little oceanside town that you could see yourself living in. The scandals that take place, the problems that each person has.....are relateable to anything that is happening today. Even the part where Promise is trying to figure out her beliefs.
This is a really great book and I highly recommend it!!

What would you do, if you are ill, and counting days before you die? What would you do, if somehow each time you survive from near to death experience, and there is another tragedy happening?
A book by Erin Healy :)
A young and talented artist named Promise is facing death. She tried to keep people remember her by trying to be famous. She actually survives from several accidents.
A character named Zack Eddy asks if he can take photos of Promise so he can draw pictures of her from them. During the shoot, her shawl blows away. Promise dives for to search for it it only to tumble down, almost drawn. Zack takes pictures of her dive to death, but miraculously she lives.
The other character is Chase, who is an autistic artist who fall in love with Promise..
In my opinion, the writer described this character well.
I would say, she has made enough desciption, that even without knowing he's autistic, I could conclude the symtom..
The third character was Porta, she was very cold blooded and hateful. She highlighted the whole story, because it's rare to find such character in Christian fiction.
The story was interesting, as more character being involved in the suspense story..
Other near death experiences always occur with Zack nearby occurs. He shows his photos to his pagan witch mom Porta Cerreto who believes Promise is the Goddess of Immortality and plans to use her for own purpose. As she stalks Promise, she orders her son to kill Promise to disprove her theory.
I would definetly reccomend this book, for a lazy saturday afternoon :)

“The LORD will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.” –Isaiah 58:11
I read this verse this morning after finishing “The Promises She Keeps” last night. I think if the book were to have a theme verse, this could be it. Erin Healy has written another intriguing story with a powerful message.
Promise is a young woman dying of cystic fibrosis. The desire of her heart is to become famous before she dies so she will be remembered.
Porta is an elderly woman, a practicing witch, who believes immortality can be found and claimed. She is determined to do so, no matter the cost—even to people she should love.
Finally, Chase is an autistic man with unusual gifts. Having memorized the Bible in four translations, he often speaks it to communicate his thoughts. He sees and draws people as trees with corresponding life-giving or taking properties. He’s caring and perceptive, yet those around him don’t always understand what he is trying to say.
"The Promises She Keeps" is the story that results when these three lives intersect in a small, west coast town. The ending wasn’t entirely satisfying—some questions were left unanswered, minor threads unresolved—yet the message of the book was clear and is one people need to hear today. I recommend this book and thank Thomas Nelson Publishers for sending it to me.

This is the latest book by Erin Healy. I read her first suspense and fell in love with her as an author. I was so excited when this showed up on Booksneeze to order. I think I was expecting this book to be more like her first one so I was disappointed to some extent. This was a storyline I had a hard time staying with. She changed characters in each chapter. Here are some of the characters: Porta, she is an aging witch/sorcerer in search of immortality and thinks Promise is the one she is looking for. Promise-a promising singer with a terminal illness that survives a series of freak accidents at the hand of Porta's son. Chase is an artist who has autism and falls in love with Promise. He draws visions involving trees. Chase also has a twin sister Chelsea that protects him since their mother left them when they were little. I kept with the story since I loved this author but felt it took too long and too much dialogue to keep me interested. The last few chapters did perk my interest and liked the ending. I did learn a lot more about autism which was very interesting. I guess I hope her next one is a suspense like her first one. Thank you Thomas Nelson for the chance to read this book free for my honest opinion.
