Saxon Publishing Saxon Math K, Home Study Kit

Saxon's comprehensive kindergarten program contains all the information you'll need to teach your child the math concepts necessary for their scholastic success. The Teacher's Edition contains a materials list and fully scripted lessons, ensuring that all concepts will be covered consistently throughout the year.

Lessons are divided into two portions-the meeting and the lesson; this program is designed to alternate between these, teaching 3 lessons and 2 meetings a week. In the meeting, review is emphasized as counting, time, estimation and more are highlighted; progress is kept track of in the separate meeting book. During a lesson, new skills, such as sorting by color, learning patterns, skip counting, measuring, time, graphs and story problems are taught incrementally. Teacher's Edition is spiral-bound softcover with 439 pages of lessons; the appendixes contain oral assessment forms, student activity masters and handwriting forms. The Meeting Book is 24 pages, softcover.

Christianbook.com is great! Had exactly what I needed qt much more affordable prices than the publisher's website. The products were much easier to find on the site, and were shipped within a few days.

I have 15 years of homeschooling experience and Saxon math is the only math program I liked! I have three Dyslexic children, one gifted, and one average. The program worked well with all of my children.
It is time-consuming in the beginning years, but if you put your time in, it is pretty much self-taught after that.
It is a great math education because it is incremental and repetitive (so important for children with learning disabilities).
I like its flexibility, too. My gifted child made it all the way through the Advanced Math book (self-taught) by 11th grade, while my Dyslexics repeated 8/7 because they were not quite ready for Algebra. (One Dyslexic child received an "A" in college Algebra and I know it was her strong foundation in Saxon that contributed to that!)
If you want your children to have an incredible math education that they will carry with them always, I highly recommend you use Saxon!

I have used saxon for many years both in public school, homeschool, and even college. So naturally when i started homeschooling my 5 yr old I went for Saxon, I know it is expensive but it is worth it. I homeschooled my pastors younger three kids for 3 yrs using other math books that were cheaper, and even though they got the job done their was little instruction and i spent so much time trying to explane the lessons, pluse it was not fun at all. With Saxon you don't have to wory about that, it is all their for you. i tought myself from 9-12 grade with saxon with no help. You must get the mantipulative kit, it would be hard to do most of the lesson's with out it. Pluse it make it hands on and fun, which is great, this way your kids will get a better understanding of basics and be less likly to hate math latter. Also it does go with the books till grade 3. As far as the the meeting book any blank calender will do. Also my son worked fast and we did 1 lesson a day instead of the one lesson everyother day like the book sets it up. So we finished in Feb. The only thing i found i don't like about this book is that by the end the student is expected to count to 100 and by 10's, but it spends little time on counting and number recognition and wrighting. So I'm going to spent the rest of the year working on those things. So you need to spend more time on counting after all you have to be able to count in order to do math. But over all i still love saxon and will keep using it.

I have always been a fan of Saxon math. Math K is easy to use and my son loves it. He asks to "play math". The only thing I would change is the meeting book. It is basically a calendar that is almost blank. The months are filled in and that makes it harder to start "off season", as we did.

Great program so far, we've only just started the year of schooling. Lessons are short and hold attention of little ones. I particularly love the way lessons build on one another so comprehension is guaranteed and doesn't seem overwhelming.
I would like to see the September through June schedule removed from the meeting book though, and allow the kids to enter in their own months in the calendar as we don't follow the "regular" school year.

I am glad I got this on sale. The Meeting book is a blank calendar, nothing special. The Teacher's Guide is thick and really needs to have a sturdier cover. The lessons are great for hands on...but very, very repetitive. A lot of it is far too simple for my 5 year old and we skip a lot of things (like repeating the orange/green color pattern on a daily basis). All in all, I like to have a TG to lay things out for me, and it is easy to adjust lessons as needed...I am not upset with my purchase, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to others.

I gave this product 5 stars because it seems really great for what I am going to use it for: home schooling my son for preschool. I taught with Saxon Math in Florida (3rd grade) and knew that I wanted to use it with my son. When I got the package in the mail, I sat down and read through almost every lesson. I was surprised at how easy the lessons were and don't think my son will have any troubles with them. I know he'll find them fun, especially with all the manipulatives (purchased separately). If you have a bright kindergartner, I'd recommend skipping this year, or at least going through it faster than suggested. Also, the package includes the Meeting booklet. That was unclear to me, so I actually purchased one separately and now I have two.

This was our first year homeschooling our oldest child in kindergarten. As a new homeschooler I was completely overwhelmed by the choices available, but we decided to use Saxon Math K and I'm glad we did.
We like the idea of using the classical education model, and in one of the catalogs (not sure which one) they lay out the "plan" for every year and it showed the kindergarten students using Saxon 1. Then I heard "through the grapevine" that Saxon K math is really basic & slow. So initially I was upset that we got the kindergarten set - but there really was no need for that. It worked out great. We chose the kindergarten level because the placement test we found online said it would be right - and it was.
We did plow through the lessons at the beginning, and yes, there were many things that my son already knew. But there were also things he didn't know -- money, telling time, measuring...and everything is very hands-on. I do recommend getting the manipulatives kit which seems expensive up front, but everything in the kit will be used for 4 years, K-3. My son wound up staying at the table most days to continue to "play" with the manipulatives, but he was just continuing the lessons on his own for fun (like the teddy bear story games, measuring stuff with linking cubes, etc.). To me, knowing that math is fun and he wants to continue "playing" when in reality he's learning, is key.
There are also worksheets in the back of the teacher's guide if you want your students to have extra practice (copying numbers, filling in blanks, etc.).
There are 112 lessons and the book says that they figure on 3 lessons being done a week. Honestly we were able to do multiple lessons in a day most times, so we probably "had math" 50 days this school year, which doesn't seem like that much - but we finished the curriculum in total and my son *loves* math. I am glad that we didn't push the issue. Starting a child in Saxon K and having math every year will still put the child in calculus by 12th grade. So between this being our first year homeschooling and being new to the whole scene, and also wanting our 5-year old to enjoy being 5 and not have to stress out about math that may be beyond him...Saxon K math was PERFECT. I just bought Saxon 1 math and we're looking forward to the next school year.

This is a great product but make sure that you follow the weekly schedule as it will be confusing to do it any other way. The manipulatives are in excellent condition.
I was more than half way through kindergarten when I purchased this book and it just does not work that way as the curriculum is cumulative. Yet it is an excellent product

I love Saxon math! I used it in High School and there is nothing better for those grades...the options for Elementary math are countless (no pun intended) but Saxon will certainly be sure to cover all the bases. I did have to combine a few lessons as the repetition got monotonous, everything you need to say is "scripted". This set comes with the "meeting book" which is nothing more than a blank calendar with arrows around it to fill in for each day you use it. So not really necessary...I highly recommend purchasing the manipulative set with this, you will NEED them and it makes math a "fun" time.

After reviewing the kindergarten program i realized that you can not do the program without there manipulatives. It says they are optional but only if you have them all ready. I planned to use the ones I have but found out it added more work for me by changing color pattens because the colors that they came in did not match, just one example. I found it much simpler to just go back and buy them. The only plus was that you use the same manipulatives through 3rd grade. Also the entire program is set up to only do three 3 lessons and 2 meetings a week. If you want to go slower or move faster it messes up the entire program. It is based on utilizing the calendar daily. On a positive note, it is a complete comprehensive program. It explains complex ideas very simply and reviews every concept daily. It stands out entirely by itself, after all it is Saxon!

I like Saxon and found it fine on grade-level as opposed to what some publishers recommend. My kids just move a little faster through. But the K level was really worth skipping. It's really just basic preschool math ideas. If you want a really gentle introduction to math, you can do it better with inexpensive workbooks that cover specific topics. Then, when your child has mastered writing numbers, counting to 100, basic clock and money, and general comparisons, he can move right into Saxon 1.

I didn't like this book, because I thought that it should include a workbook for your child. If your child is a visual learner, I would definitely think that a workbook for your child is necessary. Especially for learning to write their numbers.

I am very fond of this program. My 4.5yo is really enjoying it and we completely go at her pace. For example, over two days we might do 6 lessons and then over another two days we might do 1 or 2. I think as long as you are flexible it works great. Yes it is slower, but repition is important to mastery and keeps the student wanting more rather than leaving them frustrated. I really enjoy it and so does she!

I like the book. It gives step by step instructions. My six year old really likes the meeting book. She is learning her months and days of the week. If your child has some math experience, I would suggest a higher level. This book in my opinion is more pre-school aged. I have skipped ahead a lot.
