We have been using this program for 4 years now and love it. From a very early age it teaches them how to evaluate (in a fun and interesting way) writing from the standpoint of character development (do you want your reader to like the character, feel happy, angry or sad for the character or character's situation?), mood (based on color, light, clothing, speech, setting etc), narrative voice (learning the viewpoint of the narrator matters (are they omniscient - knowing all things going on even if they aren't there, limited omniscient - knowing only things that happen while they are there and more. It's so cool!) and so much more. This translates perfectly into them beginning to see themselves as writers with the same abilities to manage how their writing is written and how it will be taken in by their audience. I highly recommend using the companion program Writing Strands since they weave together perfectly. It is a relaxed program where the student reads a book and a verbal discussion is had with the parent/teacher. The book has all the information with examples for different ages of how a discussion might flow. It does take some practice, but the rewards of the literary understanding and the benefit of understanding that when we are the reader, it is someone else's writing that we are taking in. I hope that makes sense.
