AR ReidBaltimore, MDAge: 45-54Gender: Male5 Stars Out Of 5One star reviewer made a mistake!August 27, 2013AR ReidBaltimore, MDAge: 45-54Gender: MaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This review was written for Vine's Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words. On April 9, 2011, a woman named Julie gave this version of Vine's Expository Dictionary a single star rating. Her Review Summary line reads: "Warning ~ THIS IS NOT THE ORIGINAL VINES." Julie then gave her reasons for believing the content of this version of Vine's Dictionary had been tampered with. Julie based her suspicion on a word-study she did on the word "SOZO, saved" (Strong's #4982). She wrote that an online version of Vine's Dictionary included the following definition of SOZO: "to keep safe & sound, to rescue from danger or destruction. To save a suffering one from perishing from disease. To make well, to heal. To restore to health." Yet, when she searched for this definition in the Vine's Dictionary she purchased from CBD, she couldn't find it.
Julie then wrote: "After doing a little research I found out that the original Vines had not been copyrighted. I looked in the Vines I had purchased and found it had been copyrighted in 1996. Apparently those who republished [sic] it took liberty upon themselves to remove part of the original meaning & then to [sic] copyright it. Who knows how many other things they have changed. I would not recommend [sic] this dictionary to anyone."
Unfortunately for Julie, she was mistaken. The definition of SOZO she had read online was not from Vine's Dictionary. Instead, it was an outline written by the authors of the website she was reading (www.blueletterbible.org) on how the various New Testament authors used the word SOZO.
Vine's Expository Dictionary is such a great resource for Bible students, I couldn't let Julie's mistake influence someone's consideration to purchase it. -
