Educators Publishing Service Explode the Code Book, 1 1/2

Explode the Code, for use in the primary and elementary grades, teaches the basic phonics concepts necessary for beginning through intermediate reading. Each of the 12 illustrated workbooks in the program contains a series of lessons of approximately 8 pages in length. These lesssons follow a consistent format designed to reinforce phonetic paterns in a sequential manner. The simple directions and consistent format allow students to progress independently. The workbooks provide teachers and students with an instructive and entertaining program to supplement any reading and spelling program. Book 1 1/2 provides further practice in concepts presented in Book 1. Grades K-1

This is a great book that helps with some extra practice if you have a struggling reader. A book that most children can do a few pages on their own to help build confidence.

We just started this book a couple of weeks ago after finishing Explode the Code 1 and I am really glad that we are doing this before going to book #2. It is definitely a step up from 1 but has some overlap so that my five year old is still confident in what to do on each page. She still loves the drawings and silly sentences and is enjoying moving on the Explode the Code road.

My daughter loves these books. She likes being independent and I'm glad she can do the work herself with little supervision. Its a great price too. I highly recommend them.

My son has Apraxia of Speech & Dyslexia, which together makes reading and writing a BIG challenge. We started on book 1 1/2 & realized we needed to start back at book 1 for the workings of things & to build a foundation. I want to say that books 1 & 1 1/2 can be used together & I find they work better that way. At the bottom of each lesson in ETC book 1, it directs you to the pages of this book for further practice which makes them work very well together. You can also purchase the PAF series of workbooks to work with this system of learning for children with dyslexia. My only negative comment is like other reviewers, some of the graphics are hard to decipher.

I switched from Spelling Workout, which works great for my daughter, to Explode the Code for my boys. They just seemed to need more focus on phonics. The name, of course, excited them right away, and from there the simple exercises and fun graphics kept their interest. It seems to be working well so far.

Love all the explode the code books. Easy to use and they move at the same pace as Hooked on Phonics. Great independent work for a kindergartner. Only problem is the pictures are hard to decipher at times.

We just started using this book with my 6yo son who has ADHD and Tourette's. After struggling through various other approaches to phonics, writing, and reading, I believed we have found something that will work for him. The pages are simple, the directions are consistent (a big plus for an ADHD child), and he is proud of his ability to unscramble sentences and practice his writing (previously a chore). My younger son is also starting at the very beginning of the series and loves his "schoolbook." I highly recommend this book.

What I love about these books is that they are not numbered by grade so you can just put your child where he/she nneds to be. My four-year old complained about his "baby" work until I ordered this. Now his book looks similar to his older sister's so there is no fuss.

This is the first 1/2 book of the series I've purchased. The format of this book is different than book 1, so the students are required to use higher levels of thinking to answer the questions. While Book 1 teaches the concepts, completing these pages you know they've "got it", thus this is great reinforcement of concepts in Book 1. Two pages a day can take less than 10 minutes, and progress can be quickly seen with regular use of these products! Systematic, affordable, transportable and minimal teacher direction needed! (Great for second language learners because it subtly teaches American culture too!)
