Inter-varsity Press Dictionary of the Old Testament Pentateuch: A Compendium of Contemporary Biblical Scholarship

The Dictionary of the Old Testament: Pentateuch is the first in a four-volume series covering the text of the Old Testament. Following in the tradition of the four award-winning IVP dictionaries focused on the New Testament and its background, this encyclopedic work is characterized by close attention to the text of the Old Testament and the ongoing conversation of contemporary scholarship. Editors T. Desmond Alexander and David W. Baker, with an international and expert group of scholars, explore the major themes and contours of the Pentateuch, examine and weigh historical issues while posing possible solutions, and offer both appreciative panoramas as well as close-up assessments of literary developments and their methods. A 2003 LOGOS Book Award Winner and an ECPA 2003 Gold Medallion Finalist.

I was surprised at the chronology of Patriarchs is going back some hundred years. It might be the consequences of recent research that stimulates my zeal to quest.

An excellent scholarly resource for Bible College students or those involved in serious critical studies. If you are just wanting to know who somebody is - there are other Bible Dictionaries. If you really want to deal with Pentateuch studies - get this book.

This reference work is truly a blessing to all those who love the inside story behind the text. IVP has outdone themselves on the momumental first volume. I have the New testament set and rushed to this volume based on the indeptness of the others. I was not disappointed, and neither will you if you are a devout student of the Bible.

Outstanding! Great depth yet very readable. I also esteem the 4 vol. New Test. Dictionaries. All are an important part of my Bible study.
