Tyndale House Publishers, Inc. The Book of the King - eBook

From the minds of Jerry B. Jenkins and Chris Fabry comes a thrilling, humorous, and action-packed fantasy series that pits ultimate evil against ultimate good.

"Nothing special" is the best way to describe Owen Reeder--at least that's what he's been told all his life. When a stranger visits his father's bookstore, Owen's ordinary life spirals out of control and right into a world he didn't even know existed. Owen believes the only gift he possesses is his ability to devour books, but he is about to be forced into a battle that will affect two worlds: His and the unknown world of the Lowlands. Recommended for ages 10 to 14.

"The Book of the King" is a middle grade/juvenile Christian fantasy novel. The authors would occasionally say things like, "...sulfurous breath--which means..." for words I think most middle schoolers would know, yet they also sometimes used words that some adults might not know with the meaning only implied by context.
The story was also told in an odd way. It's like you and the story teller are hovering above the scene and he points things out in present tense using "you" and "we" as if talking directly to the reader, then it'd slid back into past tense but it's like you're watching a movie. You never get inside the characters' heads, though you're sometimes told what they are thinking or feeling.
This gave the book a somewhat distant feel, but it still came across as an engaging story told by a (hovering) storyteller. There's plenty of fast-paced action and high suspense due to physical danger (though the distant feel made it so the really scary things weren't too scary). I'm not sure this story would really appeal to adults, but I do think kids of the right age would enjoy it. I liked its mood and subtle lessons better than I like a lot of Christian fantasy.
This book was the first in a series and it did end somewhat abruptly, but it's not left at a cliff-hanger. There was no bad language and no sex. Overall, I'd recommend this interesting novel to children.

Enjoyed reading all 5 books of the series, lots of adventure. The short chapters were great when you just had a few minutes to read. I have given them to my 10 year old grandson to read.

I have really enjoyed the first three books in this series (and have the last 2 ordered!). I'm happy to find books that capture my daughter's imagination with the fictional characters and plot and yet support the bible and have a defined "good" and "evil". The books are easy to read and entertaining and I was actually disappointed that there were only 5 in the series.

I read this in order to check on what my son was reading. It was recommended Summer Reading by Focus on the Family. This series is very much a page-turner, and has a lot of Biblical parallels. The hero is very likable and the evil is clearly portrayed as such. I couldn't put it down, the story gripped me so much. Lots of plot twists and surprises, (though grownups might be able to see through some of them). Kind of suspenseful in Book # 1; some battle descriptions, but nothing too gory. Highly recommended for ages 9-14 or so. Younger kids might get scared of some of the characters.

This book was amazing, I bought the other books in the series and they were just as good if not better( I personaly think that they should make it into a movie, it would be such a good movie)One thing that I liked best about this book was that it had a lot of Biblical Principles. You should definatly buy the book.

The Book of the King is a heart racing, fantastically written book. The combination of Jerry Jenkins and Chris Fabry creates an amazing book that you will not be able to put down. Owen Reeder is an 'average' kid with an 'average' dad, or it appears so. One night after being chased through town, Owen gets saved by a mysterious person, or thing. Throughout this book, Owen will discover his denstiny, and the true indentity of his father.

I think this is an awesome, well written book, and it is really cool how it seems as though you are actually in it!!!! The way that it is written for our age group is great, because then you can understand what you are reading, and enjoy the book without missing key parts you just skip because they are talking about stuff you have never even heard of!!!!This book is intriguing, and will definitely not be boring!!!!thank you, Mr. Jenkins

Your book was a very "hooking" one. Once I started it, I could never put it down. When you described the dragon, it was a perfect picture in my mind. I like how you portrayed the book, both in reality and fantasy. If the book had a few pictures, it would be awesome. I can't wait to read the rest of your series.

The Book of the King was an incredible book to read! After every chapter, you can't wait to read the next! When my teacher told me that if we wrote how we felt about the book, and then we would get a free copy of book #2, I jumped to it right away! This book taught me many things, but a few were how I need to remember to stand up for what I believe in, and not to back down just because people disagree with me. Also, I need to always listen to God, no matter the circumstance, for God is the controller of our lives, just like the book was to Owen. To tell you the truth, I would have never read this book if I didn't HAVE to read it, and now I am hooked!
