Tyndale House Intimate Allies

Hailed by J.I. Packer as "something of a landmark," Intimate Allies honestly and sensitively probes the state of marriage today. Combining their distinct expertise in biblical studies and counseling, Allender and Longman address five questions in the marriage relationship:
  • Who are we as husbands and wives?
  • What are our roles as husbands and wives?
  • How will we work together as husbands and wives?
  • How do we experience the deepest, most profound intimacy of body and soul?
  • How do we, two sinners, learn to live with each other?
Each question is thoroughly explored by:
  • presenting a slice-of-life story of a couple struggling with the issue
  • exploring what the Creation story says about God's design of marriage
  • examining other biblical passages and integrating the biblical principles into your marriage through discussion questions
  • returning to the slice-of-life story and showing how the couple begins to move towards marriage wholeness as they understand and apply the biblical principles

Serious, Intellectual and Theologically Deep

Intimate Allies was written on a far deeper level than the average marriage book with detailed stories of several troubled marriages. After each illustration you are given bible verses and interpretations of theology that are meant to help you better understand the underlying problem and solution. There were some points that were confusing to me, but many were meaningful. I guess the best word I could use to describe this book is "Deep!"
I must admit that I like lighter, upbeat reading about making a decent marriage even better in God's perfect plan for couples. I like practical tips and ideas mixed with a little humor. I like to read books for enjoyment and relaxation that also edify and help inspire me to improve.
If you enjoy intellectually written books that cause you to think, then this may be the perfect book for you. If you like delving into the theology and psychology of marriage you will probably enjoy the way these authors have presented their material. If your marriage has serious issues, you will likely find this book more helpful than I did.
I believe that this book would be better read in smaller segments taking time to pray and internalize each point and decide how it relates to you and your marriage. The authors do not attempt to spoon feed the reader with simple illustrations and ideas. It will require effort to take in the biblical doctrines presented and translate them into change you can make in your life and your marriage. If you are willing to put in the time and effort to understand the many points made in these pages, I am sure they would edify you and your marriage.

My husband and I highly recommend this book. This is a book that should be required reading for all who get married. The authors are real people who manage to practically explain the "mystery" of marriage. If your marriage is on death row or in wonderland you will benefit from the pages of this book. Cover to cover it is full of good advice, good perspective, good wisdom and help for anyone who has said, "I do".
