As a rule, I read very few books in the Romance genre. However, I enjoyed The Pastor's Wife, by Jennifer AlLee. The story was fresh and appealing, the characters were well developed, and the plot flowed smoothly from beginning to end.
The author drew me in with her crisp and believable dialogue and fast-paced first chapter. I love the way she gradually unveilled the little community of Granger, Ohio. As Maura became reacquainted with the town, after years of absence, I felt drawn to the people, places, and activities that gave it life. Having lived in a close-knit community, centered around a small church, I could appreciate both the joys and challenges that are part and parcel of being a small-town resident.
In addition, the love story was well developed and believable. I found myself rooting for Maura and Nick along with their friends and acquaintances in Granger. AlLee, kept me in suspense by withholding one of the the reasons that Maura fled Granger, leaving her husband without offering any apology or explanation.
The author also does a good job of presenting Maura and Nick's realational struggle to choose forgiveness over bitterness. In the end, truth does set them free, but not without a lot of prayer and humble submission to the Lord on each of their parts.
I enjoyed reading this book, and will seek to read others by this author.

This was a nice literary snack. The characters were not well developed, and the plot wasn't filled with twists and turns, but it has a good message. It was simplistic in delivery, likely better for a teen or tween.

Easy reading but very true in the life and feelings as a Pastor's wife or any wife when the job of the husband seems more important that she does. Study questions good for self analysis as well as group discussion.

The author did an outstanding job of showing the effects of church, not God, the church (programs, functions, etc.) becoming more important than the family. This does happen too often and it was refreshing to have an author take on this subject.
And yes! The bathroom scene! :)
Enjoy!

Not only is this a wonderful story about forgiveness and reconciliation within a marriage, but about unrealistic expectations we tend to place on ourselves and others. In this particular case, a pastor's wife takes a brunt (which happens WAY more than many people WANT to admit), but it can so easily happen to anyone in ministry, not just pastors and their wives.
And I simply could NOT stop laughing during the bathroom scene! For those who have no idea what I'm talking about, you'll have to read it yourself and see. ;-)

I really enjoyed the book. It was a great summer read. The book is fictional but the moral was a great testimony of God's power to fix relationships, build confidence in your walk with God, and His wonderful love. The book begins right away with a twist, and leaves you wondering how the characters will be able to accomplish this. As I read further I found my self lauging, and crying. The author had a great gift on getting the reader to become part of the story. I did enjoy this book, and I actually learned the moral. I would recommend you read this and discover God's love and forgiveness. Nothing is too hard for our God.

For those that know me and my wife please note, "she did not write this novel." Yes, she is an author but this wasn't one of her stories, although I hope she enjoys reading it.
The story opens with a very implausible situation, the reading of a will and the requirement in the will that a couple who has been separated for six years (but not divorced) move back in together so that they can each receive a their portion of this inheritance. Now, while I say implausible, you know what, strangers things have happened in our culture and the more I thought about it the more I thought, I know people who would do something just like this.
So, here is the main gist, Maura (the Pastor's wife) left her husband Nick within months after he took his first pastorate in a small town in Ohio. The reason, well he appeared more married and committed to his congregation than he did to his wife. This was displayed in the way that he was always leaving to met other peoples needs and not attending to his own wife's needs.
I certainly can understand and relate to this problem. I spent years as a volunteer Police Chaplain and was called out at all times of the night and on holidays and was always leaving my family somewhat up in the air. If you aren't careful they have a good reason to start to feel neglected.
Maura felt neglected, and when a very serious personal matter came about her husband wasn't there for her. So, she left him. But they never divorced. She went back to California to live and work with her father in their family business. Nick stayed in Ohio and continued to pastor.
One of Nick's congregation dies and leaves him a gift in her will. She also leaves Maura a gift in the will. The gifts are fairly significant. For Maura, the gift is the unencumbered deed to an old Theatre that was a great source of delight to the small community in it's prime, but it needs to be fixed up and re-opened. The gift is something that Maura desires because she has a flair for drama and wants to see the Theatre remodeled.
For Nick the inheritance is a gift to his church that will allow him to do some of the ministry items that he has been unable to do because of finances.
The problem, Miss Hattie made a provision in the will that they couldn't receive their gifts unless Maura moved back into the parsonage to live with Nick for a minimum of six months. Scandalous! Well, not really, they are husband and wife. So, was Miss Hattie trying to re-unite them? Well, of course.
The rest of the book is predictable, but still well written and fun to read. I enjoyed getting to know Maura and Nick and coming to understand their love for each other but their misunderstanding of each other.
I believe that the lessons they both learn are well thought out and well presented. They are Biblical in nature as well as touching on true emotional needs and problems that real people face.
So, while the story is predictable it is still a very fun read and will give you some good life issues to think through and apply to your own life and relationships.
Enjoy!

Okay Ladies, here's the deal about this book...It is a fun, witty, and charming story of forgiveness and reconciliation between a Pastor and his wife. And it has one wonderfully appealing cover, too! I enjoyed the simple story line and the unexpected twist it took. The characters were likable and the story brought to life the real challenges of a ministry couple. It was a fun and touching read that I enjoyed especially since I am a Pastor's wife. However, while I liked the overall book, there were some details that I didn't appreciate as much. I hold to some differing theological beliefs than what where conveyed in this story and I thought that there were some points that could have been stronger. Also, I recognize that this book is intended for adult woman, but I know that many teens read adult fiction and so on that note I would caution teen girls not to read this book due to one conversation that takes place. It's not that the conversation was wrong, but simply not appropriate for teens. The authors writing is enjoyable and is an entertaining read, but this book may not be for everyone or may be one that you just borrow.* * * * *This review copy was provided courtesy of Abingdon Press, but the opinions expressed our strictly my own.

Delightful and real, the congregation had a few impossible-to-please curmudgeons I recognized as members of a church I once attended. As Maura faces the disappointments that originally drove her away from Granger, she still holds one secret locked away in her heart. The unfolding of this story and its characters is like peeling away the layers of an onion. The deeper we went, the more their flaws became apparent. At one point, I wondered if they would manage to repair this marriage at all. Well written, I thoroughly enjoyed AlLee's debut novel, The Pastor's Wife.

In her second novel, Jennifer AlLee explores a topic not often addressed: a pastor who puts his congregations needs ahead of those of his wife. Nick and Maura marry young, excited at the prospects of their first church, but neither are prepared for the demands it will make on their relationship. A separation ensues. Now, six years later, Maura moves back to the small Ohio community when she inherits an old theater with the stipulation that she must live with her husband for six months while remodeling the theater. Its a dance of propriety as the two face the opinionated congregation and explore the plan God has for their future. The story is tender and woven with grace. Jennifer raises many questions about the relationship of a pastor with his congregation and his family. Does God call a man or a couple? What roles are appropriate for the wife of a pastor? It gave me a new perspective in what it must be like to live the fish bowl life. A thought-provoking, but gentle book from a lovely author.

Let me tell you, from the first page when Maura Sullivan ran across a lobby to catch an elevator held open by her almost ex-husband she hadn't seen in six years, I was hooked. And when it turned out the two of them were beneficiaries in her aunt's will stipulating they live together for six months before collecting their inheritance, I was a goner until I turned the final page. All I can say is, what a story ... and what an author! To say I loved the characters, plot, premise and spiritual message of this beautifully crafted novel is an true understatement. Simply put, Jennifer AlLee had done it once again--delivered a captivating read with heart-and-soul characters who bleed every emotion out of you as you laugh, cry and love with them in this tender tale of reconciliation. A clever and unique plot, gentle romance and a powerful message not only kept me riveted page after page, but refused to let go once the story was done, haunting me with characters and a marriage truly touched by the love of God. Encore please, Ms. AlLee, and soon!!

Six years after abandoning her husband, her marriage, and a congregation of saints, Maura Sullivan returns to Granger, Ohio for the reading of a will. Its contents will bring the bitter woman not only back to a town she never wanted to see again, but trapped in the parsonage she disliked even as a newlywed. And back to the church that robbed her of her husbands time and affections.Maura is mad at God, and equally angry at Nick. And the secret she harbors within her heart leaves little room for healing or forgiveness. It also could be the one thing that forever destroys any chance of reconciliation with her estranged husband.Nick Shepherd doesnt know whether to be mad or glad when the will of a departed parishioner stipulates that he open his home for six months to the woman who left him without a word of good-bye. For six years, he and his wife have had no contactnot a phone call, not a letter, not even a greeting card. Can they live under the same roof now, with so many things unsaid, so many wounds untendedso much love unheeded? In this charming story of hurt and healing, of sin and redemption, Jennifer AlLee paints an eye-opening peek into parsonage life. In Maura and Nicks story, pastors and their wives become peoplereal people, with real problems and concerns. With lives and loves and marriages that suffer from lack of attention when the church becomes the other woman in the relationship.Everyone who has ever had a pastor should read The Pastors Wife. Every pastor with a wife hed like to keep should read this book. Every pastors wife who feels neglected, abandoned, and unappreciated should read this story. Any person who plays any kind of role in the church should read it, and be prepared to see their shepherds in a brand new light.Nice writing, and thoughtful handling of a delicate issue.

When Maura Sullivan married Nick Shepherd, a new pastor, she had no idea what she would be competing with. After being married only a few months and feeling far too neglected, Maura leaves Nick and the small Ohio town where she felt like she never quite fit in. Now, six years later, she has returned to the people and place she abandoned because her name and Nicks name are listed in a will. All she can think about is taking care of business and getting back out of town again, but God has other plans for Maura and Nick. When I first read the description for this book I did not think I was going to like Maura because she abandoned her husband and his congregation. But, as I read the story and learned more about Maura, I was able to understand her pain and what she went through. The Pastors Wife is a fairly short book and is easy to read, but it is filled with a lot of deep spiritual relevance. Healing and forgiveness are the main themes throughout this story and Maura and Nick both have a lot of healing to do and they both need to forgive each other. I was delighted with this book and really enjoyed watching the changes that went on, not just between Maura and Nick, but also with the townspeople and the congregation. There are many Godly lessons to be learned in this short and sweet story that I liked very much.

This is Jennifer AlLee's second published book, and she did a wonderful job of immediately drawing me into the situation of a wife returning to her pastor husband after a six year separation. I felt empathy for both the pastor and the wife as they struggle to adjust. And the way the reunion came about is a unique idea, but I won't share too many details so you will want to read this book for yourself. The wife, Maura Sullivan, also has to learn to adjust to the members of the congregation where her husband still preaches. And she needs to find a way to share her long-kept secret with her husband. The husband, Nick Shepherd, is determined not to make the same mistakes he made before. Is it true that love is more wonderful the second time around? You'll have to read this book to find out.
