In honor of Tax Day, I thought I would review this book today. Bankruptcy of Our Nation by Jerry Robinson has been a really good, albeit depressing, read. And it has taken me quite awhile to get through it.
It isn't like there was a lot of new information for me, as with my accounting background, I do tend to keep reasonably up to date on this kind of thing. But wow, all together, the book was fairly depressing.
What I wish I would have done, and would recommend to others...
* Read the introduction.
* Read the last chapter. Chapter 18, Twelve Key Strategies for Weathering the Impending Economic Storm. This chapter is great. Now, will most people want to implement these twelve key strategies without the "why" of the previous 17 chapters? Probably not. So after reading that there is hope, then:
* Go back and read the rest of the book. Maybe returning to that last chapter after each section. To remind yourself that there is something YOU can do.
I think my favorite chapter (besides the final one) was The 2040 Crisis. Maybe because I have been arguing since I was 15, in my high school accounting class, that Social Security is a Ponzi scheme, and that, as a nation, we are screwed. And yes, I'm pretty sure that was the phrase I used in class. I probably would have used a different term outside of class, that being one I just can't bring myself to type on my family-friendly blog...
Basically, though, by 2040 (a point where, theoretically, I should be drawing social security) the social security program will be insolvent. Medicare will go bust far sooner. Now, I've read predictions about the insolvency of these programs for years, and we keep putting off the inevitable. But it is still inevitable. Combined with all the other huge issues outlined in this book, I'd think it is going to be sooner rather than later.
Truth is depressing sometimes. I think everyone really ought to read this book, and really think about what you can do now. I highly recommend this title.

"Bankruptcy of Our Nation" is about how greed and poor government policy has created an inevitable, coming financial crisis for the American government that will affect everyone in America. There's a lot of good, important information in this book, especially in the first half. There's no getting around that the "coming crisis" is real. The question is only how severe it will be and when it will occur. Therefore, I was disappointed that the "12 key strategies for protecting your finances" made up only one slim chapter.
The book was a quick, easy read. Some of the information was repeated, but those unfamiliar with these concepts might appreciate the repetition. Some of his speculation about the future is already out of date, but that doesn't significantly affect the overall value of the book.
However, I questioned the wisdom of a few of his "surviving" strategies, like putting money into (among other suggestions) fine art. If people can't afford food, why would they place any monetary exchange value on art? And if all the world's currency systems are potentially as unstable as ours, is it really wise to invest a full third of your money in foreign currency?
I also felt like he got a little sidetracked in the chapters about the Federal Reserve. I felt like he was leaving some information out, that some of his statements there were misleading, and I didn't accept some of his conclusions.
Personally, I didn't like how he basically said that rich Americans and banks were deliberately trying to financially ruin the helpless "working poor and middle class." I know rich people who have honestly earned their wealth through hard work and wise use of their money and poor people who have lost theirs through foolish use of their money. I don't think he's making a fair generalization, and I think that everyone ought to look to how they've contributed to the problem instead of looking for someone to blame.
Overall, this book has some very important information, but I question some of its accuracy so you might want to research it more on your own.
I received this book as a review copy from the publisher.

Jerry Robinsons The Bankruptcy of our Nation is a timely read. In fact, this book should have come out a year or so ago. But would we have paid attention? Probably not. I know of several other books on this subject that have accurately watched trends and foretold of our current state of affairs. Sadly, too few people pick them up. But now that were right in the midst of the economic madness, Robinson offers insight into various aspects of what is affecting our national and global financial issues including world banking, oil, the bailout, and historical perspective. The 12 key strategies he presents to protect and build the readers financial state are filled with good advice. Free online resources, sound Biblical advice and timeless quotes from admirable sources.
