When I saw the title of this book, I assumed it was about Jesus, a life of God's beloved son. But Nouwen's most basic idea is that we are all, each and everyone us, of all traditions, the Beloved of God. We are each loved by God equally - there is no hierarchy of love. Nouwen shows how this idea can help us to cope with the cruelty and meanness in our world; help us cope with despair, low-self-esteem, negativity. We can learn to love ourselves and to love others. He also offers spiritual ideas, concrete ways of thinking that can bring about this sense of one's own and other's belovedness. The first time I read it, I felt that my life had been changed. I've read it more than once. It's full of hope. I highly recommend it.

I'm reading this book for the third time. There is so much on every page, I can only read a few pages at a time--sometimes the same pages I read the day before--then reflect on the meaning of these profound truths and their impact on my life. Great book!
