Customer Reviews for Bethany House Danny Gospel

Bethany House Danny Gospel

Once he had performed in his family's gospel band, but now most of his loved ones have passed on. Still known as Danny Gospel, he is living a sedate, quiet life as a postman in a small Iowa town. Soon his tranquil existence is broken open by, a dream, a vision, a sign? a beautiful woman he is sure is his "beloved."

Logic and sense tucked safely out of harms way, Danny launches a quest to find his true love. Always good-natured, he is a hero on a journey-dreaming impossible dreams and, no matter how much he must suffer, pursuing romance and heavenly glory. But is his quest really for a vision of beauty, or is it a journey through pains too deep to name and emotions too raw to feel?

Danny lived a simple life with his family; singing in their gospel band to the point that the public referred to them as the "Gospel" family. He had it easy with his loving family around him, keeping him from harm and life's harder lessons. But as the years progress Danny's family members die off one by one, leaving only his brother.
Amid the tranquility of the small town in Iowa, Danny is a postman leading a rather disappointing life. Missing his family, the band, the farm upbringing, and haunted by memories of a happy past, he dreams a dream that changes everything. He dreams he is kissed by a woman in white, and he is enthusiastically sure she is his wife-to-be. Danny begins his quest to true love, sifting through the memories, trying to find his purpose in life and find where his future lies. But is he searching for something that can never truly be recovered? Or have the answers to life's difficult questions been before him from the beginning?
I didn't realize until I was part way through the book that there was something wrong with Danny. I won't spoil it for anybody, but he truly was a character I will never forget. The simple, yet complex way that he viewed the world was endearing, and made me want to slow down and smell the roses. Despite the loss of nearly all his family members, Danny endures; trying to salvage the good memories of the past and learning from the bad times. I really enjoyed this novel, despite the fact that I wished it would have been a little longer and less abrupt at the end. A good read overall.

When I purchased this book, I thought the book was about a gospel singer (Danny) who had experienced pain, but had learned to find hope and joy through Jesus (gospel inference). After reading the book, in my opinion, Danny is a mentally troubled man who probably is Schizophrenic and did not receive help. I do not feel that the ending is one of hope. However, I was impressed with the author's writing ability. I would not recommend this book unless it's for deeper discussion and teaching purposes, with guidance and understanding of the content.

This book was very confusing. It jumped all over the place and nothing ever seem to fit. It was just simply odd and like another reader, I didn't know if the main character was in a dream like state or reality. Nothing ever made sense. I would not read this author again.

I could not make any sense of this book at all. I'm still not sure if it was all a dream, a hallucination or what. I expected it to make some sense at the conclusion but was still confused. One of the worst books I have read.

Actually I ordered this not knowing anything about it, just liked the name. There is neither rhyme or reason for this book. My husband read it because the setting is Iowa, my husband's home. He wasn't as critical but did not really care for it either.

What a strange book. It did not end on a positive note, which is something that I like. It was a roller-coaster of imagination.

okay... so it wasn't a book like any other I've ever read, but it wasn't all bad.
It was fun to read, a bit mysterious at times, and totally not predictable.
I actually found a nice and somewhat inspirational person in the special character of Danny Gospel even through his weird behavior and the unexpected storyline of this book.
I actually find that the author gave his book a lot of thought and a lot of symbols and messages are hidden between the lines and throughout the story of Danny.
Although the end kept me wondering, it was overall a good and original book and it was refreshing to read such a book after the oh-so-predictable books that authors write these days...

Is he having a dream or is it real? Could there really be a woman in white standing in his room? So starts the journey of Danny Gospel.
Danny grew up in a singing group that includes his family. His family is in turmoil a lot of the time and the story shows how he comes to terms with it. There are many twists and turns to get you to the conclusion but you will learn why Danny is the way he is. The author takes you back and forth in Danny’s life so sometimes you are in the present with him and other times you are living with him in his past.
You will find him being a postman at the time of this dream and will watch as he searches for this woman in white. You will have to read the book to see if he ever finds her but the journey itself will keep you guessing each step of the way.

This is one I cannot recommend. I kept reading it hoping it would improve, but this was very strange and weird and I felt as if I wasted my time. I noticed another reader loved it and referenced CS Lewis, whom I love, but I cannot equate the author of Danny Gospel to CS Lewis - sorry.

If Danny Gospel were a painting, it would have the imagery of Flannery OConnor, the depth of Fyodor Dostoevsky, and the hue of C.S. Lewis all in one piece of art. Wow, outstanding read!
