Bethany House What Is God Like?

Before a father leaves for his longest business trip yet, he encourages his son and daughter to remember, "Even when I'm not here, God is always with you." After he leaves, the boy and his little sister spend a fun-filled day and star-filled night remembering everything their father told them about their heavenly Father. He is powerful, loving, everywhere, all-knowing, perfect, merciful, unchanging, creator, and a Father who wants to be known, talked to, obeyed and worshiped. With imaginative text, Bible verses and inspiring full-color illustrations, Beverly Lewis and Pam Querin take difficult concepts and bring them to life in the minds of children--and parents too. Recommended for ages 4 to 8.

Explaining God to small children can seem like a daunting exercise at times. After all, God isn’t someone we can physically see, so He can seem like a very abstract person. Yet, He is a person that we are called to love with all that we are. We’re also called – as parents – to teach our children to love Him.
What is God Like? written by renowned novelist Beverly Lewis, helps to make God more accessible to young children. Lewis covers many of the major traits or characteristics of God through a conversation that takes place over the course of an entire day between an older brother and younger sister.
This warm, casual format presents theological truths with accuracy yet without intimidation, and is interest-holding enough for my four-year-old to sit through the entire book in one sitting. Scripture quotations on each page helps to under gird the points made within the text itself.
Artist Pamela Querin’s illustrations are simply marvelous! I’m not quite sure how she does what she does; if I had to guess I’d say a combination between watercolors and pastels. Whatever she’s up to, the result is a breathtaking, multi-textured cascade of color filled with wonderful light and shading. Her work is realistic while still being obviously art, it’s hard to capture in words, but we all enjoy these illustrations greatly.
It’s wonderful to find a children’s picture book that takes God seriously and teaches children about Him while still holding great appeal for little ones. I’m very happy to have this book in our collection.

Georgeous book! This is a wonderful story about a brother and sister recounting and processing the things there father has told them about God. Simple enough for young children (my 3 1/2 enjoyed it), and biblically accurate as well. This is a great book for explaining God's power and God's love to children.

Kids ask tons of questions about everything! They want to know how things are made and where things come from. They also want to know about God. In one of her more recent picture books - What is God Like? - prolific author Beverly Lewis answers many of the questions children ask in a way thats easy for them to understand. The questions include: Does God ever sleep? Why did God make people? Do you think He has enough love for everybody in the whole world? These questions, and many more, are answered matter-of-factly during a conversation that takes place mostly between a brother and a sister. Their father left on a business trip. Before he left, he told his children, even when Im not here, God is always with you. This leads to a discussion between the two siblings about all the things they have learned about God from their parents: that He made the animals, that He is everywhere all the time, that He knows when weve done something wrong, and that God wants us to obey His rules. The conversations are realistic and are complimented by Bible verses at the bottom of each two-page spread that relates to each aspect of Gods nature. For instance, when the children talk about obeying Gods rules, the Bible verse cited is Exodus 15:26: I am the Lord your God. Listen carefully to my voice. Do what is right in my eyes. Pay attention to my commands. Obey all of my rules. At the end of the book is a page titled, Teaching Your Child About God, offering ways to share your faith with your children. The text, and Bible verses, and illustrations work perfectly together to create a wonderful book for teaching children about God. Its simple to understand without being preachy.Christian Children's Book Review
